Of course, the world would be a better place without religion. You immediately eleiminate all religions based wars and atrocities and since no-one would see themselves as chosen everyone may care even more about others welfare, since helping others indiscriminately is the only +VE behaviour as a whole.

Hi Midge,

Do you think more people have been killed by athiest regimes or religious ones? I don't know the answer. Mao, Stalin, Pol Pot were athiest. Those guys killed a lot of people and I'm leaning that athiestic regimes have more blood on thier hands than religious ones. You will probably respond that athiestic regimes killed for political/economic reasons and not in the name of athiesm. Thats true. However its also true that most killings in the name of religion also had political or economic motives behind them. Its my belief that only a fool believes that the elimination of religion would slow down mans slaughtering of his fellow man.

Sure, you can't extract religion from other cultural influences. The advantage of no religion is that it keeps open the door to other approaches and the issues that are causing the confrontration may be addressed non-religiously. There seems little room for a rational approach to counter a zealots "death to infidels" belief or it's christian equilavent.
In a broader context, it removes a major tool from those in power to motivate the masses to support them in their political/economic based wars. It's one less way to create the necessary "We-They" black-white divide between two groups. "well, he's, he's, he's... australian !! " doesn't work that well in a travelled, educated population.

Hiya Stu,

What you are saying, I agre with, the world would also be better without certain atheistic regimes. It doesn't change my answer to the OP.

I think it would be the same.

There are other ways to control people. And controlled environment would happen as most people need to be controlled and there are always people who want to control others.

Take a look at politics and say it doesn't look like religion.

The world would be better off without totalizing ideologies in general, religion included.

Yes

Getting rid of religion means getting rid of a whole belief system based on arbitrary, primitive and destructive notions about ourselves, the world we live in and how to live our lives.

Alhough, on the latter, there is a lot of value to most religious teachings, the main danger of religion to Man comes from the totally distorted view it presents of us and our world. At the root of most of our deviant thinking is this comforting but totally false understanding we have of us and the world we live in.

Someone wrote in this thread that we gotta get rid of most totalitarian ways of thinking including religion. But, I say, religion is the most important category of belief systems, since it ostensibly covers both this life and the afterlife. No political ideology has been that ambitious! So getting rid of the religious fantasy (i.e. the toughest one to crack) should enable Man to get rid of most other fallacious belief systems.

Is playing every card in poker indiscriminately +ev?

The fact of the matter is there are people with worthy value and those without and there is no reason not to discriminate on such grounds. Helping pepole is making an investment, and like all investments, the goal is to find something worth more than the trade of your sacrifice.
