A vet flea bath and an exterminator is a very good idea. Re-infestation can become just as bad as it is now, or worse given time. The OP may need the exterminator to treat the ground/lawn around the house too.

If this problem is not professionally treated it has the potential to blossom into a full-fledged super-infestation, where voracious baby fleas are everywhere and are jumping up and biting the OP's ankles as well. Eggs will be laid not only in the carpet but between the cracks of the floor and damn near anywhere else. A do-it-yourself "Flea Bomb" is not adequate to handle some serious flea problems.
