I think at least half will end up dropping most of it to one or more of:
Not adjusting to changing games
Frivalous spending despite games drying up
Bad investments
Unfortunate run ins with the IRS
Bad luck
Playing above their bankroll
Tilt
Real life emergencies

I think that a fair percentage of the people who join this millionairs club will be marginal players who run really hot. With the increased size of the big games now, $1M is nowhere near as hard to reach by running hot as it was when the biggest game you could find was 10/25 or 25/50 NL.

There is a pretty wide range of personalities of the big winners on these boards. I think you will see an equally wide range of choices and outcomes these people make.

if i make a million in the next 18 months it is a virtual lock that i will go busto at least once in the following ten years

good thing i probably won't make anywhere close to a mil!

yea i think it's more than this thread is making out. sure these people are smart guys but we are all riding a rising wave at the moment, when the games get tougher or they enter more efficient market some are going to lose lots. there's always a higher game. i still don't think it's that high of a number though.

say about 12%.

i would estimate my chances of going broke within the next ten years to be somewhere between 0% and 5%. even if i somehow go crazy and bust my poker roll, i'll still have a good college degree to fall back on (computer science at stanford), so i think i'll be ok.

edit: i personally think the most likely people to go broke are PLO players.

Jay,

I think most of the losses will come in the form of life choices, like buying expensive toys that don't retain their value vice making investments. There seems to be a trend in poker players to buy property, though, so maybe I am too bleak. I think 12% is where I would put the lose most back to poker line. There are some people who post here who I would be shocked to see lose a lot of what they won in any way shape or form, but they are definitley in the minority. Most I could see taking a big hit at (variance and tilt mainly) or away from the tables.

i'm no longer really a poster on this site...i just did a search for my name and got yet another "busto" thread.

it's funny that the haters have been saying i'll be bust ever since my first "hot" run back in september of last year (seriously...if someone is good at searching, you can find tons of people who since that time have predicted that i will be busto within 3, 6, 9, 12 months, etc. so far it's been 12 months and im still nowhere near busto. awesome.)

good times. have fun everyone

Do you think you'll get a job right out of college? You're still 2-3 years from a degree right?
