These weapons will never be used on us. They are meant to keep Chavez in power.

I wonder what the name of the massacare will be when oil prices collapse, his people revolt, and he slaughters them all.

So What.....They Are Buying Russian Crap

They already have weapons to keep their own people intimidated. If a military conflict occurs between the US and Venz, these Russia jets will last about 30 seconds into the battle. Then they will become scrap metal.

These weapons weapons will do nothing except keep Russian military firms in the black.

Castro is dying. The real intention here is to help to keep Cuba out of USA hands. I bet that the old aircrafts are being transfered to Cuba. All the region, lead by Brazil and Mexico are saving a lot of diplomatic capital to spend when the time arrives. Chaves militaristic aproach are a pain in the ass but a monkey like him can be useful later. Russia and Spain (maybe EU) will have a big role at that Opera too. In fact the middle east oriented US politics and its obvious failure is a good scenario to Cubans.

You're suggesting that Venezuela is planning to invade Florida?

In Colombia, we are very concerned with Chavez. He is very unpredictable and is irritating everybody: Colombia, Peru, Mexico, US, Costa Rica, etc. His assistance of the FARC rebels is a pain in the butt to Colombia and a real obstacle to peace. And they were so close to getting him out of power.

The worst thing that could happen to venezualan citizens is for their insane leader to foment hostilities with his neighbors. He seems hellbent on doing that however. The rest of the region is getting very nervous due to his military orders. What are his plans? Most dictators dont spend billions on guns and ammo just to store them in warehouses....

I'm not suggesting anything... just reporting, asking for comments, and noting that these Russian weapons are pretty much in our backyard.

I can't imagine he actually has plans of an invasion of any of his neighbors, but it seems likely to me that those Kalashnikovs that they will be manufacturing are going to find their way into the hands of many/all of the rebel factions in the region.
As annoying as Chavez is, I can't imagine he would be stupid enough to do something to provoke a devastating response. Just as I have to imagine if Saddam could he would go back in time and not invade Kuwait.

How troubling is Russia's $1 Billion contract to sell 30 Sukhoi jet aircraft and 33 helicopters to Venezuala?

The 30 Sukhoi Su-30MK2 fighters are comparable to US F-15Es. These are long range fighters.

Venezuala is just 1,400 miles from Miami.

not troubling at all -

last week on Fox News, Mr. Cavuto talked about how scary it was that Venezuela was no longer going to sell oil to the US Citgo stations. Venezuela is regularly hyped by the Far Right as a dictator, evil, and their religious leaders have called for his assassination.

given the reactions of this nation over the last 6 years, any nation with a natural resource and poor footing with the Bush Adminisration would be fools not to better arm in expectation of hostilities.

If it's not the US, it'll be US backed insurgents - this being the SOP for American interference in Central/South America.

so no, I think they're reacting to a valid and real threat to their national security.

Not to say the man's a saint, but neither are the people he's arming up against.

The contract is now $3 billion worth. It also includes submarine and ground-air missiles.

[/ QUOTE ]The point you are trying to make is not very clear.

Are you suggesting that the Venezuelan Air Force might attack Miami, Florida ?

Or that Orange Juice futures are undervalued ?

If it's the latter, only respond by PM.
