This isn't even close to being true. Hardly anyone lists their GPA on their resume after they have enough work experience. The work experience is more recent and much more relevant to any new position you might take than your college GPA. Basically, if you have a subpar GPA and have to take a first job that isn't what you would like, you need to kick ass at that job even more than normal.

I agree that it doesn't follow you at work (at least not usually), but if in ten years he wants to further his education it will certainly follow him. Mind you, I live in Canada and you guys might have different rules down there.

GPA means nothing if you aren't planning on going to grad school. When applying for jobs after uni the person with a 3.0 and good personal skills will get the job over an anti-social bookworm for sure.

sorry man but it's pretty slim. you'd be lucky to get a shot at a state uni. the 80% acceptance rate is more likely from in-staters. do you really want to pay out-of-state tuition for UO? granted it's not a bad school but i wouldn't want to pay 20,000+ but i guess if that's your only shot..

most transfers usually have high grades from a CC where the course load is much easier/weaker than that of at a real college. to even think about transferring to Cal or UCLA you would need at least a 3.8.

In many many fields/companies, this is so wrong it's not even funny. Often, the person with the lower GPA won't even get an interview, so it's pretty hard to demonstrate your wonderful personality when no one is willing to talk to you to begin with. Furthermore, your argument assumes that people with higher GPAs are less sociable. The people who are doing the hiring know this is a myth.

It depends on the type of job you are looking to get. Most finance companies look for a base line GPA. For example, the options trading firm I just interned at was going through fall recruitment right now, so I got to see how it works. They threw out every resume with below a 3.3 GPA (higher for certain schools) without even reading them.

So you definitely need to keep your GPA up if you want to have a lot of opportunities right out of college.

this (the 2nd post) is basically true in the engineering world.

the GPA is all the counts when you are starting off fresh college. don't bother applying if you are below a 3.0. as you build up your exp. in the field, that is what will count on your resume later in life.

to deny a 40 year old job who's been in the business for 20+ years just because he didn't fare too well in college is foolish.

I interviewed for various finance positions. The top tier ones required a 3.70 GPA, the second tier a 3.50 GPA, and the third tier a 3.25 GPA.
