The goal is to avoid pregnancy.

If you mix the rhythm method with coitus interruptus (lol) you should be in the clear. If you are looking into these methods for religious reasons though, be careful that you don't go out like Onan did

A lot of couples have sex nearly everyday. Now maybe your married and bored with sex, but don't make it sound like having sex everyday is that unusual.

This is not good advice. Please review your high school health class materials.

Rhythm method + Onan's method is about the same % as using a condom. What's not to like?

Re: Fertility Awareness?

I'm a girl.

First of all to be remotely accurate at this Keep track of the first day of your menstrual cycle for eight months to a year The time between the start of each new period is the length of your menstrual cycle for that month.

Then to get a general "unsafe" time. subtract 18 from the length of your shortest cycle For example, if your shortest cycle was 26 days, the first 'unsafe day' of your period would be (26-18 = 8) eight days after your period starts. Then subtract 11 from the length of your longest cycle For example, if your longest cycle was 30 days, the last 'unsafe day' of your period would be (30-11 = 19) 19 days after your period starts

So to not get pregnant no sex 8 days after your period starts to 19 days after it starts.

And a Basal Thermometer needs to be used first thing in the AM before you even get out of bed. You will need to track your temps every day for a few months. Your lowest temp is your ovulation day. then you have to do egg/ sperm life cycle math.

And none of this is close to being 100% Accurate.

Birthcontrol FTW

He is actually quite correct really. Barring actual fertility issues it all boils down to making sure there are plenty of sperm floating around every day for about a month.

You really don't need to do it everyday, every other is quite good enough -- and likely could get away with every 3rd day. The big key here is that having sex doesn't always have to be a long involved process; often more enjoyable for both when it is, but in this case we are discussing the utilitarian aspects of it.

By the way, if she can lay down for a bit after the sex you increase your effectiveness.

And where are you getting your percentages from?

The male will, in most cases, release sufficient sperm to impregnate the female well before actual ejaculation.

Dear nits, I wasn't being entirely serious, I was looking for an excuse to work God smiting someone for pulling out into the thread. But, since you asked...

(All numbers are from the Wikipedia articles which are obviously not perfect, but, they are cited and good enough for this.)

Pulling out:
Perfect use: 4%
Typical use: 5-28%

Rhythm:
Perfect use: 5%-9%
Typical use: 25%

Condom:
Perfect use: 2%
Typical use: 10–18%

Even if we take the worst typical case for Onan-ing + Rhythm style we get .28 * .25 = .07. Tack on a few percentage points for a stray rope here and there and you still end up in the typical condom usage range.
