Yeah - my grandmother, who isn't very well off, sends me cheques every birthday. I can never bring myself to cash them.

I am sure she notices that you never cash them. I would think it would hurt her to know that you refuse to cash them.

The same thought goes through my head everytime I don't cash them. But I figure of the two options - not cashing them is best. It never comes up when we talk.

The grandparents gotta be mid 70's and are probably a bit senile.

You're a [censored] ungrateful prick. Don't worry she will be dead in a few years and you won't have to worry about it.

Side topic, my grandparents send between $10 to $25. I would not mind this at all, except, it's a check. My brain has a hard time justifying going to the bank to deposit a $20 check, and often the check just ends up getting lost somewhere and never cashed.

Perhaps my grandparents are leveling me.

Kramer: There's a check in all these? Why don't you cash them?

Jerry: I don't know, it's ten dollars.

Kramer: But you got a whole pile here. 1987?

Jerry: Oh so what.

Kramer: Jerry, your grandmother gave you this gift. She wants you to spend the
money, to have the fun that she can't have. Oh, this is tantamount to a slap in
the face.

Jerry: Oh, get out of here.

Kramer: Jerry, a gift not enjoyed is like a flower that doesn't blossom.

Jerry: Alright, alright, I'll cash the checks.

Kramer: Yeah.

Silly troll, he's never indicated in any way that he's being a jerk to his grandparents about this. In fact he even mentions that he appreciates being remembered. He just finds the actual content of the gift slightly strange/humorous.

Go peddle your troll wares elsewhere.

Noah: I never saw that episode, but it's pretty funny, thanks. I don't think it's being taken as a slap in the face, but it's possible.

Of course, my grandparents, over the course of the last 3 years, have somehow moved my birthday and now call me and wish me a happy birthday the day before my actual birthday. They are convinced that my birthday is now one day earlier, despite me being 36, so its not like it hasn't been the same for over 30 years or anything.

For my particular grandparents, I will vote "senile" and just be happy that they remember at all.

I don't think I would call this inconsiderate, but I wouldn't find anything "annoying" about it. It might be a cause for some interesting postulating as to why they sent it, but nothing more.

They sent it, in theory, to try and be nice or because they like you or whatever. I hardly think that is cause for annoyance.

As for cashing it, I would deem that whichever suits your fancy. I would want it cashed if I sent it to someone, just becuase I could pretend they used it.

A better idea might be to cash it and buy something "with that $10" that you could show to them in the future. So as to show that you got enjoyment from their odd monetary gift.

So you're saying free money sucks? OK.

Free money is still free. I'd prefer a nice big fat 1000$ check but I'll take 10 bucks over nothing

Anyways, it is the thought that counts, right?
