Sophie's Choice - her choice, obviously.

I've known about this forever and have never been able to bring myself to watch the movie. Honestly, I don't think I could handle it.

Excellent topic. Two jump right out at me.

1) the last half hour or so of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotted Mind" makes me sob uncontrollably. Part of it is sorta personal because the female lead reminds me of an ex-girlfriend who I was madly in love with, but the relationship was too unstable to survive. But mostly I love it because it really forces me to think in very broad terms about the nature of regret, memory, and choices made. And that kind of stuff slays me every time.

2) The scene from "The Ice Storm" where Kevin Klein finds Elijah Wood's body. He carries him back to his parent's house and the kid's dad breaks down over the body of his dead son. When the film came out, my buddy called it "the feel bad movie of the year", and he was 100% right on. You have to be made of stone to not lose it there.

I didn't even love the movie, but the end of Requiem for a Dream just gutted me.

The two old women hugging outside the hospital gets my vote.

--Many of the moments posted didn't devastate me emotionally, because they were so unreal that I couldn't suspend disbelief. The scenes from Sophie's Choice ... just too unrealistic for me to buy into.

I'm guessing you haven't done much reading on the Holocaust.

The one film that really REALLY made me lose it was "Pay It Forward".

So unexpected, and so overwhelming, I was bawling like a baby, snot running down the face and everything, it was S.A.D.
