I can't speak for this firm, but I know of two BigLaw firms who DEFINITELY kick the attorneys out early on reception days. Good move on their part. Law firm receptions are the bomb. It's funny, though, that (at least at my law school) they are "1L Receptions," and they get a HUGE turnout (especially for the "big" firms), yet such a small percentage of those who attend actually have a chance.

the correct course of action is just to give your receipt to the recruiting coordinator and say, "I can give you my address if you don't have cash handy."

oh, unless you want a job there. then just eat the $18.

Yeah I definitely consumed more than $18 worth of food and beer, and they gave me the USB keychain, so i guess we're even.

Do they secretly count how many beers you consume at these?

I find it funny that the big firms think they can trick people who were at the top of their game, at top colleges(mostly), and are at the top law schools with cheap antics like sending all the lawyers home early so it looks like nobody's working late. I think I might have said something like "what are ya'll a bunch of slackers? Where is everyone?"

We took a tour and they're showing us all these huge offices with amazing water views. Then they are like here is X's office, an associate, and she has an amazing water view too! I asked the tour guide "So what did she have to do to be the token awesome-office associate? Is her dad a partner?"

The tour guide laughed it off, but he knew I was on to him.

You've alluded to it a few times in other responses. For example, if the profesor says he's not interested in policy, then don't bother reading anything about the case that deals with the policy issues.

But are there other aspects that you could possibly expand on, or is it all just a variation of what was previously stated?

Damn, I usually blow off those receptions. I need to start attending.

Also, I got my interview results back. I bid on 29 firms, and got 14 interviews. I only missed about 3 of the firms that I was very interested in (though I'm on the waitlist, so there's still a chance). A few of my interviews are with firms that I don't really care for; they were "safe bets" down near the bottom of my bidding list.

Otherwise, I think I did OK, since I pretty much had no [censored] clue as to what a good bidding strategy was.

A question for those with OCI experience: At your school, what is/was the average number of interviews that people landed? I'm not sure if 14 is too many or too little (though I suspect the more the better). Also, note that at our school we have 2 rounds of OCI--one now, one in September. The September go-around has fewer firms coming, so maybe I could expect another 8-10 interviews. Is 22-24 interviews in a fall pretty standard? Or did I somehow [censored] up my bidding?

my school does everything by lottery. firms don't get to choose who they interview. you get 35 bids and then can sign up for any open slots. basically people do as many as they want.

I think I did 30ish during 2L. hopefully doing 0 this year.
