ZOMG! An Oxford University, UK, intellectual has posted in the Zoo!

Joanne states that the online Survey "has been designed to improve understanding of the characteristics of people who gamble online."

In effect, imo, this is a test-run for the study, and Joanne and her colleagues are very willing to take suggestions for improvements before it goes mainstream.

(Note that they are not conducting market research or collecting data for any for-profit reasons; also, there is no political agenda underpinning their study.)

Mike, I'm disappointed that you've thrown your green weight behind this "survey." (If you are indeed endorsing it.) It seems to be very poorly thought out regardless of the fact that it is a trial run. It shouldn't have been allowed to survive in the zoo, let alone promoted here. At least not until Joanne and her cronies improve the biased questions. (and no, i'm not interested in her references.)

Please bring this debate to the subject thread, rather than here, if you have any more comments. Thanks.

However, to comment on your post, as this one is already here: I don't understand your negativity. The project will proceed the way they intend. The good news, though, is that this is a major opportunity that no other group will have to shape the way the final Survey is presented to the world. Already, they have taken on board some of our comments, and the reason I brought it to ATF was to try to attract some of the more theory-minded readers to give their valuable input.

If we all pooh-pooh this unique chance, we will have no one but ourselves to blame when the newspapers start quoting their findings against us, because of the irrelevance of some of the questions to our area of gambling leading to their misinterpretation of the results.

Fair enough. I didn't post my opinion in the zoo thread because it had already been stated several times by others. And Joanne seems to make it abundantly clear that she isn't too interested in changing the tone or wording of most of the survey.

Wake up people... Wexler to introduce legislation exempting Poker from UIGEA

The bill planned by Democratic Rep. Robert Wexler would carve out "skill games" such as online poker, bridge, chess and mahjong from the online gambling prohibition that President George W. Bush signed into law in October.

"It allows Americans to play poker online as they should have every right to do," a Wexler spokesman, Josh Rogin said on Wednesday.
