Because they weren't a great defense at the beginning of last year, but they are now and it's taken people awhile to realize how good they really are.

Yeah, pretty much. Sometimes players improve, sometimes they decline, sometimes they just go through the motions like Randy Moss in Oakland. Do you disagree with this?

Look at the Saints offensive line. Last year they were one of the best, this year they've suddenly become hot garbage and it's hard to explain why but if you watch the games it's plain to see.

BTW Albert Haynesworth is their best player not Pacman Jones.

Edit: If you want to argue that the Titans' defense was going through the motions at the beginning of last year, then got inspired when the team pulled off a couple of comebacks and they're playing hard now, I might buy that.

anyone who believes this year's titans are good because VY is their starting qb is truly delusional. young may be a great QB eventually, i'm not arguing that, but what he's done this year can hardly be considered "helping the titans win games."

all this talk about the titans offense being bad: they are the 6th best rushing team in the NFL, chris brown, not vince young, is the reason that offense has done just enough to be 3-2. young has 4.0 ypc, down from 6.7 last year, the offensive line has been great this year, young has only been sacked 5 times all year for christ's sake. and the 3 interceptions he threw against atlanta were not a result of a poor offensive line that didn't give him enough time (young was not sacked all game), they are a result of the fact that at this present moment he is not an intelligent passing qb.

so don't say young makes this team a playoff team. he most certainly does not. their running game and their defense makes them a playoff team.

Chris Brown's stats:

vs Jax: 19 carries 175 yards 9.2 avg
vs No 11-38-3.5 1TD
vs Ind 12-34-2.8
vs Atl 10-27-2.7
vs TB 5-26-5.2

Claiming Chris Brown is the reason the offense has done enough to be 3-2 is a lot more ludicrous than saying it is from VY's influence. He had a huge influence on the first win, and very little on every other game.

Kerry Collins, while easy to make fun of, is a legit starting NFL QB(maybe "was"). He was a top pick(so we know he has the natural tools), has veteran experience, and doesn't make too many bonehead mistakes after his first few years in the league.

Kerry Collins was signed only a few weeks before the season started. He managed to complete 46% of his passes at 6.1 yards per attempt with 1 TD and 6 interceptions. All Vince Young had to do was not throw two interceptions per game to be an improvement over Kerry Collins.

That, and his rushing abilities, are the differences between Young and Collins last year. Young completed 51% of his passes for 6.2 ypa. But he threw 12 touchdowns, ran for 7 more, and threw only 13 interceptions. One of them came in week 1, and 7 came in the 3 blowouts (Dallas, JAX, and New England). So in the other games - the ten close games VY started - he threw only five interceptions.

So yeah, Young was a pretty big improvement over Collins.

The Titans defense wasn't "great" last year, but it did put the Titans in position to win twice last year before Vince Young took over. They held the Jets to 23 points and the Dolphins to 13. A competent offense could have scored more than 26 points in those combined games.

After Vince Young took over, they held Indianapolis to 31 points in two games and generally played well enough to keep games close.

This year, they've allowed 13 points per game, and that's after facing Indianapolis.
