Yeah, pretty bad even by university TV standards. But it happens.

I worked with a kid on a student radio college-hockey broadcast who kept calling the 'puck' a 'ball'. WTF? Embarassing. He was pretty flustered and just plain wasn't very good.
But that was just because he was new.

After several years with some decent minor-league gigs he eventually got a job doing play-by-play in the NHL.
Ummm...yeah, I would pretty much kill for that.

I definitely wouldn't want some of my early student-radio and TV efforts to get out there.

Maybe someday I'll post on youtube just for your guys' amusement a clip of yours truly as a nervous student-TV sideline reporter giving an update on an injured player.
The whole time I'm talking the team's goofy looking bird-mascot is directly behind me and doing a wacky dance and waving to the camera right over by shoulder and looking generally silly.
Naturally, I'm completely oblivious to this and just send it back up to the booth where the two main announcers are laughing their asses off at me.

I used to work in TV in Indiana and the grapevine story behind "Boom goes the Dynamite" was that the kid was actually a producer and was just filling in at the last minute because the regular sports guy was sick/late or something. I heard it secondhand (a guy I worked with had worked with another guy who was on the shoot) so take it with a grain of salt.

miss australia pageant late 70s/early 80's. the winner was named Leanne Dick.

Live on national tv the presenter (a well-known commentator Sandy Roberts) introduced her to the nation as "Leanne Cockk".

the look on this poor young 18ish year olds face was priceless, she tries to keep her composure but you can tell she's horrified. he also compounded his mistake by immediately correcting himself, "Leanne Cockk, umm, i mean Dick."

i tried to find the clip, but couldn't.

Two that I saw on TV when I was kid (sorry if they were already mentioned) were Woody Hayes punching the Clemson player in the Gator Bowl and Howard Cosell reference of "look at that little monkey go" about a run by Alvin Garrett.

I'm too lazy to find it, but a post-game interview with Earl Weaver after an awful loss is the clear winner, assuming it's real.

Weaver curses his way through it - when asked about new acquisition Terry Crowley, he says 'Terry Crowley's [censored] lucky to be in the [censored] major leagues - we got him from [censored] Cleveland because they didn't want him' - finally the reporter resorts to his emergency question from some woman inquiring about her tomato plants, and Earl says 'That woman should be more concerned about who's going to [censored] her next instead of her goddamn tomato plants - she should be going out to bars with her [censored] wide open'
