I don't know how the hotel can be held responsible for was supposedely was in a cheap safe in one of their hotel rooms. I mean they surely owe you something for your trouble, but they can't exactly be expected to repay whatever you claim was in the safe. Please realize that I am not saying the Rio has handled this situation properly though.

You seem to be getting some great advice. You might try writing e-mails and letters to Harrah's Chain of Command, Public Relations people, and even the Board of Directors. Jack Binion would have reached in his pocket and handed you the money. It seems it would be in the gambling joint's best interests to fork over your money. I believe in Traveler's checks, lock boxes, and hiding money in my shoe. Any thing you leave in a Las Vegas hotel room can be stolen. I think this could have happened at other joints also. The attorney and the gentleman staying at the Rio seem to me like the best experts here. You should get ten dimes minimum. It's negotiable at this point. Once during a World Series at Binion's, the lights went out. A casino employee was alert and stole $200,000 from the small poker cage where people were buying into the tourney events. He got a bag in the gift shop and headed for the Philipines. They knew who he was but I don't know if they ever caught him. Around gambling, people are trying to steal your money.

Sorry for your loss. I agree it's worth consulting a competent attorney. And it may be worth it worth it from a PR standpoint for the hotel to settle even if there isn't a legal case. However, I can't blame any hotel for having limits on liability for valuables in the room. Otherwise, anyone could just claim that someone stole X amount of money or jewels and get paid off.

Seems pretty easy to me.

You got drunk and blew a ton of money playing craps or blackjack. In a panic you came up with an off the wall story to get it back. then now you are trying to get Harrahs to give you money.
Go to the media and make it an all out press. they will give you the money. The charity thing is touching part to the story.

Lesson: Dont drink and gamble high stakes.

I don't see how you can get your money back. The person with the most opportunity to get in that safe was you. You are the prime suspect if there is no witness or video.

How can you expect to prove that you had a certain amount of money in that safe? Or any?

Even if someone had the means to open the safe, they are not going to go about randomly forcing doors. So, if this happened as you said, you need to figure out who might have had knowledge that there was a high probability of a significant sum of money in the safe.

If you can't do that you are out of luck, unless by fluke the perp gets caught.

Good luck, you are going to need it.
