Springsteen has a ton, but one of my favorites currently (mostly because of the way he sings it): [After an encounter with a prostitute, while lamenting a past love:] She bought me another whiskey Said "here's to the best you ever had" We laughed and made a toast It wasn't the best I ever had It wasn't even close [/ QUOTE ] Yes, that's such a great ending to that song! Apologies for the Bruce hijack but here's a few of my other favorite Springsteen lyrics: "Living Proof" Well now on a summer night in a dusky room Come a little piece of the Lord's undying light Crying like he swallowed the fiery moon In his mother's arms it was all the beauty I could take Like the missing words to some prayer that I could never make In a world so hard and dirty so fouled and confused Searching for a little bit of God's mercy I found living proof "Long Time Comin'" Well my daddy he was just a stranger Lived in a hotel downtown When I was a kid he was just somebody Somebody I'd see around Somebody I'd see around Now down below and pullin' on my shirt I got some kids of my own Well if I had one wish in this god forsaken world, kids It'd be that your mistakes would be your own Yea your sins would be your own "Used Cars" Now, mister, the day the lottery I win I ain't ever gonna ride in no used car again "Straight Time" Eight years in, it feels like you're gonna die But you get used to anything Sooner or later it becomes your life "Cautious Man" One night Billy awoke from a terrible dream callin' his wife's name She lay breathing beside him in a peaceful sleep, a thousand miles away He got dressed in the moonlight and down to the highway he strode When he got there he didn't find nothing but road "Factory" Early in the morning factory whistle blows, Man rises from bed and puts on his clothes, Man takes his lunch, walks out in the morning light, It's the working, the working, just the working life. Through the mansions of fear, through the mansions of pain, I see my daddy walking through them factory gates in the rain, Factory takes his hearing, factory gives him life, The working, the working, just the working life. "Walk Like a Man" By Our Lady Of The Roses We lived in the shadow of the elms I remember ma draggin' me and my sister up the street to the church Whenever she heard those wedding bells Well would they ever look so happy again The handsome groom and his bride As they stepped into that long black limousine For their mystery ride Well tonight you step away from me And alone at the alter I stand And as I watch my bride coming down the aisle I pray For the strength to walk like a man |

And once we had meaning
but now we're just hollow And once we felt pain but now we're just numb And once there were words but now there's just glances And once we were smart but now we're just dumb -Slobberbone |

It moved me so much I actually made a short film that was inspired by it and shares the title name. |

Of all of the people that i used to know
Most never adjusted to the great big world I see them lurking in book stores Working for the public radio Carrying their babies around in a sack on their back Moving careful and slow (chorus) It's money that matters Hear what i say It's money that matters In the usa All of these people are much brighter than i In any fair system they would flourish and thrive But they barely survive They eke out a living and they barely survive - Randy Newman (I'm listening to this one right now. Anyone else love cleaning to this song or is it just me? ) |

Re: What are the truest lyrics you ever read?
Love and cleaning just don't go together for me. I usually have to get severely soused to have any hope of doing serious cleaning.
