[ QUOTE ] jesus christ that lineup is ridiculous [/ QUOTE ] So far this year Youkilis hasn't had the ridiculous walk rates. [/ QUOTE ] true but his OBP has still been awesome (.422). he's getting more hits on favorable counts instead of taking walks. i'll take it any day (obv). kyleb, i never considered moving tiz/manny to 4/5. interesting. |

This didn't seem worthy of it's own thread maybe not even worthy of a post but it's kind of interesting to me obviously.
My nephew/godson Jeffrey had the opportunity to play golf with Jim Rice and Bob Montgomery two days ago. He's a great kid and a pretty good golfer and is a freshman at Salem State on a partial "golf" scholarship. He works Summers at Pleasant Valley Golf course in Sutton which is how he got this opportunity. So, he's over to my mother's house cutting the grass and gets a call on his cell phone from his boss, the assistant pro who asks him if he can get over there to play with him against Rice and Montgomery who had called at the last minute for a tee time and wanted to play against some good competetion. So my nephew says he's got to check a couple things and he'll call him right back. Now if that's me, what the heck is there to think about? So he asks his nonna if she ever heard of these two guys(he hadn't) and should he go play and she tells him of course he should and to forget the grass. So he goes and immediately gets it that Rice doesn't want to be fawned over so he doesn't and just treats him like anyone else. He said a few people approcahed Rice and he was pretty grumpy with them. So they played and into a few holes, Jeff really gets a hold of a drive and it's out there over 300 yards. He's a very quite kid as a rule but talks some occasional smack and says something to Rice challenging him to top it. Rice didn't say a word, got really intense while Monty was laughing his ass off and taunting Rice about the kid talking trash to him. So Rice cranks one and beats Jeff's drive by about 5 yards and turns to him and says "see if you can do that when you're 52". Anyway my nephew had a good round, 77 and carried his team and they ended up tying Rice and Monty. |

[ QUOTE ] jesus christ that lineup is ridiculous [/ QUOTE ] So far this year Youkilis hasn't had the ridiculous walk rates. [/ QUOTE ] .338 .422 .527 84 ISO-OBP is pretty damn good. They keep pitching to him rather than around him, so he's combining a great batting eye with outstanding line drive power and contact. Eventually his batting average will drop and his secondary numbers will go up. |

[/ QUOTE ] In theory your best hitter should be batting #2, not that it makes a difference. However, I like the idea of putting hitters early in the lineup that have both strong walk rates and high pitches per AB to get to the bullpen. It's basically the same idea that the Athletics and Indians use. Unfortunately there will be massive uprisings in Boston if Manny/Ortiz don't bat 3/4, I would imagine. |

In 2003 weren't they the other way around? I don't remember there being a ton of talk about them flipping.
Also, in case you don't read FJM and haven't seen this yet: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/pecota/youkike01.php Nate Silver's a racist. |

FWIW, Manny and Ortiz have both expressed preference to hit in the 3rd spot. As recent as March 30th Manny has expressed his disappointment:
[ QUOTE ] When Ramirez was informed that Ortiz would bat 3rd and he would be the cleanup hitter, he was disappointed. Manny wants to hit third. [/ QUOTE ] |
