Canadians do this because they believe they will be treated poorly if they are mistaken for Americans. Adding Canadian flags to everything is a standard pre-trip task. Canadian travellers are very concerned that some Americans also do this to pose as Canadians.

I may be an idiot, but why would Americans be treated poorly? I'd think that if someone behaves well, they will be treated well.

Also, if I thought it would cause me to be treated better (which I don't), I wouldn't hesitate to display Canadian flags. This isn't something that Canadians should be concerned about.
