It seems that you Americans as usual don't realize that there is intelligent life outside of the US. I agree that goverment, taxes, manipulative media etc are the worse but those are not specific for America. So my answer is:
Hollywood with all its dumbing effects.

If it were true youd be right. John McCain and Elliot Spitzer (hopefully with some spillover to Shrillary) are poster-boys for why government still fears the citizens.
