In the end of Fight Club where they show Brad Pitt and Edward Norton fighting, then show it as it's "really happening" in the security camera. Would have been much better if they had just left the dialog the same, but avoided beating you over the head with the fact that they were one person. Not sure how it's handled in the book, I forget. A little ambiguity would have improved the film though.

Yeah this sucked. Especially the way he was throwing him self all over the place in ways that were physically impossible for someone to do.

Right--and particularly disappointing after the scene in his boss' office.

"And then, at our most perfect moment..."

Really good.

Completely disagree. What did you find hamfisted about it?

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, you're entitled to disagree. It seemed to me that having chosen to film the thing in B&W, he'd better not break that convention and introduce colour suddenly without a damn good reason. Using colour so jarringly to ram home the message that this individual child was one tragedy in a whole avalanche of personal tragedies just seemed ham-fisted to me. The movie is devastating enough; the tragedies on both a personal and a historical scale are evident to any awake viewer already. I just don't think the colour switch was necessary. He over-egged the pudding, if you like, and in so doing he insulted the audience's intelligence to some extent.

For the record, I would count the Wizard of Oz as a better use of a colour/B&W switch.

I think if you took all the very worst aspects of Daver, diebitter, Clarkmeister, and Blarg, you'd end up with Rushmore.

If I'm going to be insulted, I would at least like to know what it means.

If I had to deduce, I would imagine I am being called cynical or mean-spirited or something.

I figured he was talking about the movie Rushmore. I still don't know what it means tho...

2. I didn't think the King Kong line was bad, but I did think that the Mexicans finding the wallet was silly, and so was EH jumping onto the hood of Alonzo's car. Also, why is Alonzo going to the Russian meeting point without the money? He thought they'd give him an extension?

[/ QUOTE ]

The King Kong line was cheese, but the result of that scene was what made no sense. The ghetto rises up against the corrupt cop, shoots him, and then lets him go for reasons that are completely unexplained.

jtr- The Wizard of Oz is obviously the better use of a color/BW switch. It's the best use ever.

Memento is a pretty decent recent one, though.

Fight Club is not even close to a "great film." If you think about the twist the entire movie falls apart, it's not real cleverness.

Since the worst aspects of those guys are cliquiness, infantilism, hubris and ignorance, I don't get it either.

Whew--was beginning to think I might be universally reviled.

And nobody really wants that.

Except maybe Ann Coulter.

In the Godfather novel, there is a point made about the legendary size of Sonny's penis, and I don't think I noticed it in the movie until after I had read the book. So, I always though it was both subtle enough not to detract from the movie and a sort of insider-y nod for people who had read Puzo's work.
