I’ve never heard of it myself but the thought of it just rubs me wrong. I feel the same when political journalist rub elbows at private parties hosted by the Washington elite they are supposed to be reporting on.

Well, I work in the media and I wouldn't have a problem accepting a tip from a player.

That said, I would never expect a tip, and I had never heard of that happening until this thread was brought to my attention.

Anna Wroblewski is also super nice, and she's a pretty decent player from what I've seen of her.

Nice gimmick account created by the poster who initially broached the topic to back up his own idea that a journalist accepting a tip from a player is alright.

Default Anna W in the money, with class to boot

Well said. She IS talented, and now she's a force to be reckoned with.

I suggest all those who can't seem to do anything but spew forth hatred and negativity for Anna follow this advice:

Bring your own towels for crying in because they are generally not provided by the casino.

I for one will be taking great interest in this lady's career. Some notable other players have done the same, and surprise! They all have class too (but they don't need flames so we'll just leave the names out).

A refreshing change from the norm - Anna W monies three wpt events in a row.

Congratulations Anna, you did good!

Al

Tip the media? this is insane! Its not just totally unprofessional of a journalist to expect someone they are reporting on to pay them, it's also little short of a bribe!

What next - tip the crowd for cheering? They were there watching all that time after all. Madness.

If you don't get paid enough see your employer or get another job.

I have read this entire thread and followed updates on pokerwire and I have not received one dime from her. She is dead to me.

Anyone know anything about her - she won the $3,000 buy in event 9 at Bellagio after placing 16th in the $2,000 buy in event 7 where she got knocked out by Kathy Liebert.

Anna Wroblewski was born in Vietnam but was adopted by a Polish-American family based in Chicago.

She does NOT speak Polish and she doesn't speak much Vietnamese either.

If the UIGEA hadn't passed, Anna would have been in demand from the online poker "schools".

However, she now has the same problem as many of the U.S.-facing players: she does NOT have the required language skills (i.e. German, Spanish, Polish) to open up new markets for the online poker industry.

The market for player sponsorships has shifted to the point where photogenic females with some poker-playing ability are no longer guaranteed a primary spokersperson sponsorship deal.

Just ask Erica Schoenberg, who, despite her German name and German heritage, does not speak German. She lost her primary spokesperson sponsorship deal with MANSION and she basically had no choice but to take a "Friend-of-FullTilt" second-tier deal at a significantly reduced rate.

(Michael Binger, who finished 3rd at the WSOP main event, has the same problem: German name, German look, but does not speak German.)

To follow-up, I wouldn't call it "journalistically unethical", because, frankly, most of what passes for poker media is cheerleading, and not exactly reportage. It's PR-oriented and shouldn't be held to the same standard. (I do not mean to say there aren't talented writers covering..cf. Dr. Pauly, who rocks.)

But anything that leads to any form of expectation that it's the writer's subject that is expected to tip the writer is most definitely tacky.

[/ QUOTE ]

You might not call it unethical but anyone who is a serious journalist would disagree. If you're doing "PR Work" then a tip isn't a tip it's your payment for work done.

You should compare what you do to covering a sporting event. As unalike as the two situations are, the ethics you should follow are pretty much identical. You don't accept tips covering the Super Bowl if your favorite team wins and you wrote a nice story about them.

Who do you write for?

[/ QUOTE ]

Um, you're confusing me with the OP. All I've every written is album reviews for a music webzine, and a truly lame poker blog that I rarely touch, anymore.

My point is that I don't believe most of those people covering poker tourneys are writers or practicing any form of "journalism", except in the boradest sense. My take is that they're largely (there are exceptions) just another group of railbirds who are fortunate enough to get some pay or expenses covered for railbirding.

Either way, it's complete BS to expect payment for anything from the *subject* of your story. But I think you're pointing your indignance in the wrong direction -- I never suggested any tip to the "poker media" is warranted.

No, I know exactly who made that first post, and I'm not affiliated with him or his company. I was just throwing in my 2 cents, as I'm a longtime 2p2 lurker and word of this thread has been making its rounds.
