[ QUOTE ]
Clark, I agree Mich is not a big time programs anymore. NCAA sanctions will destroy a program very quickly. However, the programs is now clean, they were 'supposed' to have 2 very highly touted recruits coming in next year, so things are looking to be on the rise. We still have issues about our facilities etc... But, like I said Tubby taking the Minn. job so fast is still kinda shocking to me. I'm not even sure I want him in Ann Arbor, but still kinda puts things in perspective for me as a Mich fan. [/ QUOTE ] Just to be clear, my point is that despite all that bad stuff, it's STILL shocking he goes to Minny over Michigan. |

In the mind of an 18 year old recruit, how much does all that matter? [/ QUOTE ] that is the million dollar question How well can the coach convey that message to potential recruits? Looking at Self and Kansas, I say it can go pretty far. [/ QUOTE ] You don't sell today's players on 'ancient' history. You sell them on the future. You really think Self uses Danny Manning or Jo Jo White as examples in his recruiting? |

considering Manning is one of his top assistants...yeah [/ QUOTE ] Ok, I'm a bit out of the loop there. But, do you think that registers with an 18 yr old? More than the last 10 years of your program? More than the realistic chance at playing minutes? More than 'connecting' with the coach and assistants? |

[/ QUOTE ] I think the history gets the foot in the door- a lot of doors. From there, it comes down to other things. History also helps with fan base and exposure presentations that coaches make to recruits. It's very important for a young man to be aware of the school. There is a reason Carolina, Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, and UCLA can grab a kid from just about anywhere in the country. The kid is *aware* of those schools. |

Whenever traditional big time powers have downspells (Notre Dame/Alabama football, Kentucky basketball, etc.)
there are always people over-stating how "dead" the programs are and people over-stating how "super awesome top tier" they are. The truth lies somewhere in between. Traditional powers can go dormant for long stretches. Oklahoma football was the suck for 15 or so years and they have been a consistent top 10 (usually top 5 title contender) the last 8 or so. The days of a few schools completely dominating are over. But the traditional powers in all sports still have a leg up on the non-traditional powers. The tradition usually means more fan support and more money for the program. |
