Thank you, sir. I enjoyed your poetry thread in the EDF, though I don't remember posting in it.

I am incredibly nitty when it comes to grammar - not intentionally, I just can't help myself - but if I had to pick one mistake that destroys me more than any other when I hear it, it would be this: when someone tries to seem smart and ends up "correcting" something incorrectly. You know what I mean, I'm sure. "Whom" in the wrong place, "you and I" as an object, whatever. There must be four or five levels on which this causes chaos in my frontal lobe every single time it happens anywhere near me.

I know Daryn and others have said it before, but it's incredibly true: some mistakes are just mistakes, but some can be incredibly good indicators of how much brainpower someone has and what he's spending it on. At least in my experience.

EDIT: GA, I have seen people use "&c." for "et cetera," which I think is pretty cool.

MORE EDIT: Everyone should see Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (the movie my earlier clip is from) - not only is it great and very funny, it also fulfills my lifelong wish to see Val Kilmer correcting people's "bad vs. badly" usage.

I'm doing a teaching english as a foreign language certificate at the moment and on yesterdays lesson plan the first row said

"Today we will be doing a grammer lesson on 'the third conditional'".

Nobody's perfect. as long as they are coherent, who gives a damn.

(and yes, i inked over it before assessment.)

Default Then vs Than

It blows my mind how often people use then when they should be using than. I hate it.

effect vs affect is also misused often

Gerunds take the possessive. Not especially irksome, but it is a common mistake and I thought I would mention it.

fluffpop you're wrong about irregardless. it sucks but sometimes enough morons are incorrect that they change the rule. irregardless is a word.

[/ QUOTE ]

True, but it shouldn't be.

[/ QUOTE ]

ok.. so why say it isn't a word when you know it is?

[/ QUOTE ]

Because it's the internet and if I say it people will think it's true. Besides, it's a colloquial word. Tah-dah!

because it only became a word through widespread and consistent misuse?
