He was the man in live 98'. I'm sure tons of NBA players have the exact same opinion.

He says he doesn't want gay people in the locker room. I'm wondering though aren't there women all over the locker room like trainers or reports or whatever that could see them showering or changing? Wouldn't this be pretty much the same thing? Or does he just think that all gay guys want to have sex with him or look at his [censored] every chance he gets and that makes him extremely uncomfortable compared to a woman who is in that position who he doesn't want to have sex with.

I love how every guy calling in to sports radio to criticize Hardaway has to first clarify that they aren't gay.

There are women in the locker rooms but they don't go into the showers and the men can cover themselves up if they want to.

Whenever some guy says he would be uncomfortable being around gay men in the shower, everyone always scoffs as if this is the most ignorant thing in the world, then everyone insists that gay men aren't EVER checking out any of the other men, etc.

Well, what if some dorm at some college announced all the bathrooms were going coed and there was just a big community shower, and some of the women said they'd be comfortable showering with other guys? Would that be ridiculous? Why isn't that the same objection?

Wait really? That's absurd. I'm a friend to teh gays but I would be slightly uncomfortable showering day in and day out with a gay teammate (definitely initially)... I always thought this was the standard "thing we can't say out loud but obviously we all think this".

Whenever any athlete mentions not wanting to be around gays in the locker room or shower, there is always instant and universal scoffing from the media and the gay community, as if it's ridiculous to claim that gay men might be checking out the schlongs in the shower. I don't think it's ridiculous to think that. If I were showering with a bunch of hot female athletes I'd be checking out all the boobs, butts and pussies I could see.

Drew - yeah I agree.

On a basic level it's just the introduction of "this guy might wanna bang me" (when a straight guy is around a naked gay dude) that creates a visceral response / revulsion / fear in most straight men.

I mean I'd deal with it and over time, sure I'd adjust, but this is not ignorance this is a basic straight male response to the situation (based on current social convention and context). Yes, I understand rationally gay dude may not be attracted to me, and prolly not necessarily thinking about banging me, but I would still have this visceral reaction in a situation where we are both naked and standing next to one another...

Not talking about it and being judgmental is stupid.

And hey if it doesn't bug you as a straight guy, you're in the minority - no need to lord it over us less socially progressive folk.

Goddamn, I got lots of explaining to do in this thread. I was SURE Coles came out as bi. I even saw that ep of Oprah because I heard about his story a bit. If I remember it wrong, then my bad. But... I dunno, i could have sworn he came out.

As for the 10% thing, I've heard many many times that the % of gay people in out population is 10%. I guess if there's controversy on that, we won't be able to solve it here. The reason I said AT LEAST 10% in pro sports is becuase of the tendency for people who are deep in the closet to go really hardcore into something "manly" in order to dismiss any suspicions. It's pure speculation on my part, but I think that there are probably alot of gay pro athletes.
