But you know of course that the majority of those bombs were the actions of RCMP agents, this is well documented.

on the plus side we'd save the annual handout they get through equalization each year

[/ QUOTE ]

Some of you people really need to learn the difference between a vertical fiscal imbalance and a horizontal fiscal imbalance. The equalization payment to Quebec is an equalization from the feds to the provices - all the provinces.

[/ QUOTE ]

Actually, it's to eight of the provinces. Alberta & Ontario put out more than they get back.

kneeco,

[ QUOTE ]
1) Do you realize that Quebec is not economically viable by itself*?
*to e2, do you realize that BC isn't either?

[/ QUOTE ]

Care to explain? What portion of Canada's debt should a province incur if they were to win separation. What determines economic viability?

Also, what factors do you guys feel should determine the number of seats given to provinces in parliament?

casque,
as a result of this thread i went from not really having an opinion on this subject to having the impression that separatists are a bunch of douchebags.

As a U.S. citizen who lived in Montreal for 3 years, I totally agree.

[/ QUOTE ]

Don't make the mistake of thinking that the loudest speaking most ignorant member of a group is the most representative. Many separatists have very good reason for feeling the way they do, but their objective of separation is really a means to and end.

The biggest benefit for me is the fact that it is an affirmation to the world that there is this piece of land in North-America that id french-speaking and really different than the rest of it. For me it is mostly for cultural reasons.

[/ QUOTE ]

OP,
Quebec received exactly half of the $11.2. B in equalization payments to the provinces last year. This equates to about $750 per man/woman/child or about $50K over one's life.

Is this "cultural affirmation" really worth $50 K?

Are you really prepared to give up this gravy train to protect a cultural identity which frankly has never been threatened?

Don't you think a business owner has the right to display a sign in any language he or she wants?

[/ QUOTE ]Sure, as long as french is present.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is crap. If I own an Indian grocery store and only wish to sell to Indians, what's wrong with making the sign only Hindi? It might negatively affect sales, but you think I wouldn't have the right to do that?

He tends to place blame on the anglophones though. He feels that they have some weird guilt complex. For example, when Conan O'brien was in Toronto and made some anti-french joke about people in Quebec (I'm guessing your memory of it is better than mine), the main people that were upset were people outside Quebec just trying to be sensitive overzealously.

Jared

This is a Canadian thing. We like to be offended for people. It's kinda what we do. We're the ultimate PC country.

agreed

also, without having done any research, based solely on arguments in this thread,

a) i don't think quebec will be economically feasible on its own; at least not without a LOT of changes and a much decreased standard of living and govt benefits

b) language != culture

c) u are arguing from emotion and propoganda, not logic and facts

d) the current language laws are horrible and unbelievable imo

e) quebec shouldn't have double the seats in parliament if they have similiar populations
