Would be a better question if they were playing slow-pitch softball

El Diablo always ends these threads, although this one is particularly obvious. Basketball team has absolutely no chance.

well the hs team would be favored-but when i played baseball I used to work the pitcher for a walk-now you got arenas on first iverson on second wade coming up-the base stealing potential would be enormous not to mention the pitcher gagging and loading them up for garnett 11-6 nba

hitting a baseball isn't necessarily something every 'athlete' can do...
i'm a high school baseball coach, and i'll take my high school team over an nba team every day, and twice on sundays... it's like when the football 'athletes' come try out for the baseball team, and don't hit a single ball out of 20 in the batting cage... we have the best pitcher in the state coming back this year (only pitcher out of 3 to be picked for last year's division 1 first-team all state that was a junior), and i wouldn't even waste him...i'll throw my #3 or #4 pitcher, and we'd beat any nba team by the 10-run rule.. |

[ QUOTE ]
I picked the NBA team because I was under the impression that the majority of athletes who make it to the pros in any of the trhee major sports was probably a star in all three sports in high school. That's not true? If it is true the fact that they haven't played the game for a while would be approximately made up for by the fact that they are older and even more athletic. We are talking here about playing 16 and 17 year olds from an average high school. [/ QUOTE ] Thats what I was going to say. |

my school's pretty big...1600 kids or so, and in the biggest division in ohio...
we played teams last year whose varsity team was very, very good, but whose jv was terrible, because they just didn't have the number of boys in the school to have depth. that said, i'll take ANY bigger high school in this debate like i said... the nba team would be more athletic, and would probably try to run alot if they got on...but even a decent high school pitcher would probably pick off one or two, or at least throw off the timing of the jump... again, i'm biased, and i'm only really judging the team that i coach, and we're admittedly pretty good...the 'average' high school team will vary, but if you put, say, the eastern conference allstars in a game against my high school team on our field, we'll win the vast majority of the time.. |

Not that this topic is life changingly important, but if you don't play baseball...you have no idea how much work is put into developing those skills. I played both sports in HS and know without any doubt, the baseball team would destroy NBA players, even those with some experience. Softball, is a different story. $100 to any college basketball player who makes a youtube video hitting 20 80mph baseballs and catching fielding 20 hits from various positions. FYI, you'll notice that highschool and college baseball players are quite athletic and fit. Most people just see pitchers and DH's and assume all players are that slopy. Andrew Jones and Arod will wreck most people in any athletic competition.

Wiper,
What state do you coach in? I don't doubt that your team would beat the NBA team, especially with your all-state pitcher on the mound. In fact I would take my high school team with me pitching(at the time), over the NBA team also. But my team was a league championship team in California. My main point in this thread is that the average high school baseball team sucks. When I played American Legion baseball, I played for one of the top teams in the country. Both years I played we played through an incredibly tough california state tournament where almost any team there could have won. When we moved on to the regionals, playing other state championship teams, we absolutely demolished them. I'm talking winning by 20 runs in a 7 inning mercy rule game. These teams were state champs for their respective states(states like Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, etc.). American Legion teams tend to be better than high school teams simply because most draw from more than one high school. So a state championship team should be well above the average high school team, but the ones we faced really sucked. I can only imagine how bad the average high school team from these states are. Some of the teams we faced wouldn't have a chance against an NBA team. |

Not particularly relavent, but when I was in 7th grade (about 25 yrs ago) the Philadelphia Eagles played my high school basketball team. It wasn't close, the Eagles won easily. Of course, football players playing basketball is a lot different than basketball players playing baseball.

What about....
Could the eastern or western conference NBA all stars, beat the top girls high school softball team in the state? |
