Dream Theater's live version of Funeral for a Friend absolutely smokes Elton John's recording.

Pretty much anything by Nirvana.

There's one specific version of Zeps Dazed and Confused thats like 20 minutes long that is just sick and blows away the studio track, I dont know which exact one it is though.

Crossfade - Cold.

The studio version is horrible...but the acoustic version isn't half-bad.

Bob Dylan - Shelter from the Storm

On Blood on the Tracks it sounds like a nice acoustic song.
On Hard Rain is sounds like the Apocolypse and Hell rose up with a guitar for a quick version.

I generally despise live recordings, but a few of the songs on Billy Idol's acoustic album are money. Specifically "White Wedding" and "Cradle of Love."

The entire Grateful Dead playlist.

As a looooooooong time Deadhead, I (obviously) agree, but there are a few exceptions. I think the studio version of "Friend of the Devil" is better than any of the several hundred live versions I've heard.

[/ QUOTE ]

Totally agree.

I could add about a million here, but the first one (that wasn't mentioned yet) that came to mind was:

Staind/Aaron Lewis - Outside

The live version of this song from the Family Values Tour is just soooooo good, and I am a pretty far cry from a Staind fan.

Also (for anyone who knows them):

Slightly Stoopid - Collie Man

There's actually a debate between me and some fellow heads regarding Jam band studio albulms, if in fact the studio version are the way the band "wants you to hear them" and there for should be considered the best rendition of the song.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm almost afraid to admit this, but as much as I love(d) seeing Phish live, I almost invariably prefer their studio material - complete opposite of the Dead.

"Cowboys from Hell" by Pantera...

There's also a pretty killer live version of Cemetary Gates they started playing on the radio when DD died. I'm not sure what it's from, but I definitely like it better than the original.

sorry to bump the topic but I just heard an awesome one:

"Bouncing Around the Room" - Phish

[/ QUOTE ]

I am in love with the version on "A Live One". Pretty much any Phish song is much better live.

[/ QUOTE ]

yep, listening to that CD made me make the post.

Anything from...Toots and the Maytals

Definately much better live than studio. Toots is the Jamaican James Brown

[/ QUOTE ]

wow... really good call on that one.

I'd like to add Seal to the list, his live acoustic CD is the best thing he ever released. It was an industry-only bootleg, but 10 years later they finally released it as part of his greatest hits collection.
