It really doesn't. I first saw it, like almost everyone I've ever met, used in the movie A Clockwork Orange, not Singin In the Rain. It was presented in such a ferociously vicious, disturbing scene, with such over the top irony, that it was completely unforgettable in that movie and probably the thing I think of first whenver I think about that movie at all. I was in a screening of Singin in the Rain once, and the whole theater burst into laughter at once because we all knew the depraved scene in A Clockwork Orange, and it completely transformed the scene in Singin In the Rain and made it utterly hilarious just by reference to the very movie that referenced it.

Most people I've met haven't seen all that many musicals, especially old ones.

No, this is indeed a list thread only, and really doesn't belong here. I would've locked it had I been around, but I wasn't. I'm guessing it's played out now, so no action to be taken now.
