[ QUOTE ]

Its worth noting that unlike a year ago, there are now several ongoing "Broad topic" threads: What TV are you watching?, What books are you reading?, What movies have you watched?, Beer Club, Pregnant, B&S, Weekend games, Ask the Ladies & Men threads.

These cover broad topics and allow everyone to share their thoughts and help to build a sense of community. I expect we will see a few more of these types of threads.

[/ QUOTE ]

True, but some of these long running threads need to be cut up into manageable chunks. Some of them get so big they are hard to navigate and I find myself ignoring them because of this.

I was wondering if the Ask the 2+2 Ladies thread should be locked and maybe just start a new one? I don't know how people feel about that. I tend to ignore super long threads myself, don't know why.

I would love it if more people would try their hand at making a new thread. Let's see what the shy regulars and lurkers can come up with. Consider it a challenge! Is there something that's been bugging you lately? Is there a current event or news topic you would like to discuss?

Your OP does not have to be long or intellectual. It just has to spur some type of discussion.

here's some example threads that'd be cool:

What's the coolest moment of your life?

Dumbest workplace statement/decision you ever witnessed

Why is poker villified in American political thinking?

Michael Moore: good or awful documentarian?

'The worst movie I ever saw, expecting something good...'

Your worst encounter with the law

Okay I came up with these in about 10 minutes. See what you can do that's similar and start a thread. Hell, use these if you want and have a good story...

I disagree with the concept of cutting up threads. I've found that threads with high view or post counts tend to attract more readers.

As to navigation, if you are using Flat mode with a high post setting, this shouldn't be an issue, and everyone should be using Flat mode and bump their setting for threads & posts per page, imo.

Are you sure? Set the forum to show all posts then sort by posts. I think you'll find that you are an active participant in most of the high post count threads in TLDR.

Here's a list of the TLDR threads with > 200 posts...

I sometimes feel that way about the pregnancy thread, but like the 'Ladies' thread, there's just too much good content that would be lost if the original was put on the shelf (at least in my opinion).

I'm also in a similar mindset as Duke. I'm more of a simple thinker, and like to add my bit thoughts now and then. But in trying initiate a thread, I feel almost unqualified...like I have to make the thread overly intellectual.

And like Duke, phrases like 'overly intellectual' start popping up....

okay, less talk about chopping up old stalwart threads. Such actions do more to give a feel of growth and activity than actually provide real growth and activity.

What we could do with is much, much simpler and straightforward than that: more starting new threads along the lines of whatever you want. Forget 'intellectual', forget worrying about whatever barriers you feel need to be climbed, just get on with it.

Seriously, any of you, if you like any of my previous suggestions, run with them. If you have something different that seems to have potential, please start a thread.

In fact, dcasper and duke, please fire away ASAP.

If you're going to have variety, you've got to tolerate some diversity. You're going to get some bad with the good. As I see it the best thing you can do is start threads about things you're interested in and hope someone else will discuss it with you while you ignore the rubbish piling up in the corner.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree with much of this, but will add that one man's rubbish may be another man's treasure. If we all liked the same exact things, this place would get boring real fast. Diversity of opinions is the spice of life, or something like that

[/ QUOTE ]

I worded it badly but that's exactly what I was saying. The intended meaning was that while you are participating in what you find interesting, just ignore your rubbish.

With regard to the locking threads, I'm torn. Once locked they disappear fast, which stinks. But at the same time, when I see a thread that has added 10 pages overnight I rarely open it. I know it's either a really great thread or a flame war, but I just can't be bothered to invest myself in trying to play catch up in huge threads.

Amen! I won't read them myself. I'm sure I would have some input for What movies have you watched recently or What are you watching on TV tonight. But they have become such behemoths I won't open them.

I would have no problem myself locking the "What Movies Have You Watched?" thread. However, I would really hope someone generates some new threads if I agree to do it. If I lock it and then no one posts a single new thread after the fact I will be very peeved.

One poster in the 2+2 Ladies thread stated that he thought we were going to lock it after the end of a month and then start a new one at the beginning of each month. Would this be better or worse in your opinion?

MrWookie, Diebitter -

any thoughts on me locking my What Movies Have You Watched thread? If it is discouraging others from starting new threads on movies then I am not pleased. I would rather we have fresh threads going then some old movie thing I started months ago. I'm undecided on locking the 2+2 Ladies thread. There's some really good stuff in there!
