I think the key to this thread is that it wasn't just mainstream nonmeat food being offered. It sounds as if it was extremly unordinary food. I agree that if the host had brought out normal food void of meat then there'd be no reason for a post, but if the food was extremly creative vegetarian crap I think there can be a reason to be upset. There's no reason they have to serve you meat, but the least they could do is have something edible.

[/ QUOTE ]

This sounds about right. At least, I'd hope it's right. I find it hard to believe that someone would be horrified by a meal simply due to lack of meat - there have to be other factors here.

Out of curiosity - can we get a better description of the actual dishes served?

Jains don't eat meat, many Buddhisits and Hindus don't, and I think Shinto traditionally didn't eat meat. Anyway, there is no shortage of hundreds of millions worth.

QTip,

I suspect that you have given up on this thread after a lot of bashing, much of it after saying you were probably incorrect, but if not, what nationality was this family?

Also could someone correct my punctuation? I clearly suck.

I'm guessing the OP would be the guy who'd object to taking his shoes off when entering Japanese households. He's say they should have told him beforehand to wear clean socks.

[/ QUOTE ]

Wow, there's a huge difference between finding food objectionable and finding a PEOPLE'S CULTURE objectionable.

Vegetarianism is NOT a culture. It's a dietary choice, no more, no less.

[/ QUOTE ]

Quite wrong. Many people are vegetarians for religious reasons, and some are so for ethical reasons.

[/ QUOTE ]

What religion states that being a vegetarian is a must???

[/ QUOTE ]

I guess being a vegetarian would make it easier to keep kosher, however its definitely not a religion or a culture.

[/ QUOTE ]

Many Hindus and Jains practice vegetarianism for religious reasons. Both groups will consume dairy products but not eggs. Jains also do not eat certain kinds of vegetables.

While observant Jews will eat vegetarian meals when they are away from home if necessary, that is, if kosher food is not available, vegetarianism is not philosophically compatible with Judaism. Several Jewish ritual objects are made of animal products--torahs and other sacred texts are written on parchment and the shofar, blown during the High Holidays, is a ram's horn. It is impossible for an observant Jew to adopt a lifestyle that avoids animal products. Traditional Judaism does not accept vegetarianism for ethical reasons, considering it opposed to divine law, and would only support vegetarianism if it is determined to be required for a particular individual's health. There is currently a small movement of Jews in favor of vegetarianism, using the ethical argument that cruel conditions on modern factory farms violate Jewish principles on the ethical treatment of animals. It is also possible for Jews to argue in favor of vegetarianism on the grounds that hormones and anti-biotics given to animals endanger human health. Judaism does not admit any ethical arguments against eating the meat of animals raised on old-fashioned free range farms without anti-biotics and hormones, as long as they are slaughtered and the meat prepared in accordance with the laws of kashruth.

However, Judaism does have a complicated series of laws on the ethical and humane treatment of animals which must be applied even to those animals that are used for food and other necessities (such as ritual objects). These laws lead to some requirements which will no doubt seem strange to anyone who is not an observant Jew. For example, animals must have a day of rest on the Sabbath (no fetching in the newspaper). No neutering of male dogs, cats, and other animals (castration of any male human or otherwise is forbidden). No spaying of female animals since that is regarded as inflicting unnecessary pain. No ear or tail docking, no declawing, and so forth. No pet food that mixes meat and dairy. Animals must be fed first, before the human members of the family. Absolute prohibition of hunting for sport. And so on.

have you ever went over a friends house to eat
and the food just aint no good
i mean the macaroni's soggy the peas are mushed
and the chicken tastes like wood
so you try to play it off like you think you can
by sayin that youre full
and then your friend says momma he's just being polite
he aint finished uh uh that's bull
so your heart starts pumpin and you think of a lie
and you say that you already ate
and your friend says man there's plenty of food
so you pile some more on your plate
while the stinky foods steamin your mind starts to dreamin
of the moment that it's time to leave
and then you look at your plate and your chickens slowly rottin
into something that looks like cheese
oh so you say that's it i got to leave this place
i dont care what these people think
im just sittin here makin myself nauseous
with this ugly food that stinks
so you bust out the door while its still closed
still sick from the food you ate
and then you run to the store for quick relief
from a bottle of kaopectate
and then you call your friend two weeks later
to see how he has been
and he says i understand about the food
baby bubbah but we're still friends

Evan,

"ground seaweed and avocado puree"
"tofu and radish soup"

That actually sounds pretty tasty to this omnivore.

Grunch...

It is most likely the couple told your wife what kind of dinner party they were having, but she forgot to tell you.

I don't think the issue is with vegetarian foods. I think the issue is that the food tasted bad.
