OK, I know that people generally feel that at around 1400 or so you can start taking shots at NL 100, but this is really a feel thing. How many buyins do you think you should allocate to say it was given a fair shot?

[/ QUOTE ]

With $1400, I'd say no more than 5. That still leaves 18 buy-ins for NL$50.

Wow. My plan was to get the roll to 2.5k than take a 5BI shot at 100nl (currently at 2.1k). Am I just a nit?

Lol I got $2500 or so, and still only take a shot from time to time at 100nl when I'm on tilt . But I'm a total nit :P, but I think most of my roll came from bonus money, and a bit of casino whoring so my skill isn't really at the 100nl level yet.

That was my thought too ama0330. I am around 2500 and I wanted to still feel that if I lost a few I would not be hurting, but knowing how many buyins to lose and still consider potentially variance and getting used to the level.

One thing I think I will never get is how people 8 table. Just don't think I will ever be able to do that.

I plan to wait until 3k and then take 500 shots. If hit 2,500 grind NL50-->3k, rinse/repeat until permanetly there.

I couldn't take the -700 night I had in mid-December at NL100, so I figured 3k would be safer this time

I've had 2 shots at 100NL and have failed miserably both times. My experiences:

First time, I took my first shots at around 1.8k BR, things went alright, so I tried to move up when I hit 2k.
Got my roll up to 2.3k before I went on a downswing (whether this is due to being outclassed or just variance is another question) and returned to 50NL once I dropped below 1.6k.

One month later, I was back up at 2k, so I tried to move up again. Initially, things went much better during that attempt. I had my roll up to 3.2k when another massive downswing started. Once I dropped below 2k I moved down to 50NL again, where my downswing continued until I was below 1.2k.
This time, after extensive reviewing of my play and all big pot situations, analyzing stats, calculating my EV in key situations, I was able to mostly blame variance for that 28 buyin downswing. (Lost around 60% of flips; 50% of situations where I was supposed to be 2:1 favorite; many, many KK/QQ vs AA situations)

So, here I am, rebuilding once again to have my next attempt at moving up. I'm aiming for 2.4-2.5k to have enough room for swings. I might even stick it out to 3k, because one thing's for sure: 100NL is way more swingy than 50NL.

Pfff Kazana, if I would have been in your shoes, I probably would have played $2000nl with my whole roll or I would have quit playing online poker. I already hate having a break even month...

My plan is the same as Jonyy's though, I do want to move up, but I'm taking my time .

I didn't mind the losing as much as the nagging feeling that I might just suck at poker. I mean, you can only blame variance for so long, but if you're on your 3rd massive downswing within 2 months, you should be pointing fingers to yourself first, before even thinking of blaming variance. That's why I went through all that paranoia style DB analysis in the first place.

Swings happen to everyone, and you've just got to sit through them. I'm not dependent on the money from poker, either - I've got a good job that I enjoy a lot.
Furthermore, if I'm a winning player, I will eventually get the money back with interest.
But, if I'm simply too damn untalented or dumb to win at this game, I would've wasted months and months of hard work trying to improve. That'd suck far more than the petty cash.

What took a lot of pressure off me, was that I've cashed out all the money I've ever put into my BR. So, practically, I'm freerolling. If I should fail, it would only have cost my time playing a game that I've enjoyed. Still better than having played WoW or something like that and paying for it all those months, I guess...

looks like everyone is interested in movin up to 100nl. so maybe this will give me some motivation to write up my thoughts even tho i havent played as many hands as i would like yet and deffinatly havent run great by n e means.

ill see if i can work on this over the weekend and try to post it this weekend sometime. so look forward to it sometime soon. but kazana is spot on about 100nl being WAY more swingy. especially when u run semi crummy.
