fwiw, I got a DUI a few years ago, I blew a .167 and I guarantee I was still driving better than 90% of the people on the road. I think that DUI laws are archaic and Draconian and MADD is an evil bunch of nitty old people that hate the idea of other people enjoying life. That being said however, it is very naive to suggest that drinking has no effect on driving and that driving drunk is "fun." This is the kind of cavalier attitude that gets people killed, which is why I took issue with the post that I did.

alcohol impairs driving ability - this is a very widely known and well documented fact. Car wrecks happen where "people happen to be drinking" mostly because the drivers ability to react and control the car they were driving was not as good as it should be.

Cars are very heavy things - they move very quickly. If a car happens to hit a person travelling at around 40mph there is about an 80% chance that person will die.

I used to have the same opinion - then someone I love got killed by some useless [censored] who couldn't be bothered walk 2 miles home or get a cab. He walked away with a small fine.

What do you say to people that know from first hand experience exactly how [censored] dangerous driving while drunk is? People who have their lives wrecked by some clown who thought nothing of getting behind the wheel when they were in no fit state to drive? There are thousands of people who have been through what I have and much worse - and reading flippant comments on message boards glorifying drink driving, advocating the practice and congratulating people that get away with it make me feel sick.

OP should be banned from driving for at least a year IMO. A 2k getout clause is a copout. I hope to God that in the future none of you ever lose someone you love for such a pathetic reason.

Obviously this is not the case - although I wish I lived in a world where the only people that were harmed by drunk drivers were the stupid [censored] [censored] drivers themselves and not innocent bystanders.

Having a few drinks impairs your driving ability and increases the chances of having an accident - fatal or otherwise. If you repeat the same thing enough times eventually the unlikely event will happen. Keep driving when you blow over a .08 for a few thousand more times and the it's likely sooner or later you WILL cause an accident. I really hope that if/when this happens that noone innocent dies.
