RHCP has 4 outstanding musicians and there shows are absolutely amazing. They rock out so hard on stage and Flea is one of the best bassists out there. IMO not overrated.

Speaking of overrated, Flea comes to mind.

No way Kings of Leon is overrated. I bet most of the people in this thread have never heard of them. I also happen to think they are awesome...

/edit, whoops, didn't read your whole post. 2007 is way better.

I think I'll add a band that I like to the overrated category: U2. There music is good and they understand how to market themselves, but when you sit down and listen to theri body of work, they are overrated. I can't really see how they have changed the musical landscape over the last 25 years.

i agree with a lot of people here:

doors: some of their lyrics are just outright stupid. and their music isn't really very good. i can't really stand them.

RHCPs: yes seperately they are all very good musicians, but when they blend it together, it's not very good imo

nirvana: i'm a huge fan, but they are very overrated. they just hit home to me, when i was that age. i've always dug the very simplistic song writing structure, but yah, overrated in general. the praise they got was way more then they deserved.

rage against the machine: decent. just way overhyped. not to mention, it seemed like every frat boy at my college listened love them, which just cracked me up for some reason (the frat boy cook at the restaurant i waited at, would sing along to "f*ck you i won't do what you tell me" which i replied, you're in a frat, you gotta do what they tell you)

DMB: i think they are the suckiest sucks that ever did suck. if one person likes them, then they are overrated.

green day: they make good pop punk, but seemed like they were way overblown years ago. i don't know, maybe that hype has finally died, i don't get mtv or anything.

radiohead: man i wish they would just go back to making rock music. enough with the expirmental electronica rock. i do like them a lot, but they are way overhyped by record store workers, and english lit. majors everywhere.

You were cruising along until here. Has their been a band in the last 20 years that makes music as consistently accessible and good as they have? And its not like they've sold THAT many records. They are probably vastly underrated by like 60% of the population and slightly overrated by 5% or something like that.

i'm too lazy to read 8 pages of this thread,
but i've always thought u2 was way way overrated. same kind of half mumbly lyrics (thats right bono) over and over.
maybe i just have bad taste, but i've never understood their sensation

yah, i hear what you're saying, but around people i know and hang around, they are regarded way more then they should be, imo. they are very good, and very cutting edge, but deep down i just wish they'd go back to their older stylings, or at least move away from the electronica stuff.

i guess i should quit hanging around record store workers and english lit majors.

For all the people that even assume 1 band is overrated... Let us hear some of the songs you've written, then I'll see if you can pass judgement on a band.

I will never say a band sucks or is overrated due to the fact that those bands have already made millions off of the stupid public who, apparently, don't know what REAL music is.

At least this attitude will save you from having to think or form any opinions for yourself.
