[ QUOTE ]
In the largest reform synagogue in Southern Nevada, just outside Las Vegas, and no one recognized you? [/ QUOTE ] That explains it. It would have been MUCH juicer if Barry infiltrated an orthodox shul (Yiddish for synagogue), that would have been nearly impossible to pull off. Still hysterical, I like! Any religious Jews here (I am not religious - I am as agnostic as they get) that can explain the ramifications of Barry's stunt to the temple and/or the Torah? Barry - do you have video evidence of the prop? Is there any concern of a nutcase from the JDL laying a bad beat on you? |

With a good coach and the right kind of preparation, how hard would this be? [/ QUOTE ] In the temple I went to as a kid it would have taken years of preparation to pull this off, Hebrew is not an easy language to learn - especially if he has to sing as a canter from the Torah. |

Nope. Not way off at all. It would be a memory thing mainly and being somewhat personable. As for the singing part, as long as you can pronounce a CHHHH and move up and down in your pitch (no matter how dissonant) it'll pass for singing...

I didn't think of it as actually learning Hebrew, but just to memorize it phonetically which could be done easily within a month.

[ QUOTE ]
sebok said this story is NOT true and that barry didn't write the first post. [/ QUOTE ] I have to say that it didn't ring true to me either. Most jewish congregations contain rather more than their fair share of smart, well educated people. It's hard to imagine that somebody could not only learn enough Hebrew in a month, but could also learn enough theology to get through a full service without raising suspicion. I suppose somebody could just write this stuff and have you recite it parrot fashion -- possibly also the hebrew component, but that would be harder. Also, how would one satisfy the terms of the bet? If you just stood up there for an hour but the congregation weren't even slightly convinced, do you win? How do you measure the extent to which the congregation *were* convinced? Ban barryg. if 3 million dollars were really on the line, this would be a very easy bet to pull off. i doubt anyone would be stupid enough to give that kind of action. even before the sebok debunking, bayes theorum should pretty much already have settled it.

Plus, it's a reform shul so there may not be many people who attend the Minyan services. |

So if Barry really did fool part of a congregation into false worship for that service then was this a brag or a beat?
