I'd be all in favor of a woman, but I don't like Hillary. She panders so blatantly it disgusts me.

Really, there isn't much of anyone I like despite the massive field. Money buys elections, candidates are beholden to everyone except the actual average citizen. Anyone that wants to be elected is pretty much someone I don't want because the personality that wants that power isn't one I'd trust to have it.

"A Female President: Is America ready?"

I really didn't think it could happen yet, but India just pulled it off, so maybe I'm wrong.

Rudy's pro-choice stance is what hurts him with the religious right.

Other than that, I have no idea why CDS gives him no chance. He will play the 9/11 card all the way, it is a good card.

[/ QUOTE ]

Even if the religious right doesn't like Rudy (or finds Mitt's Mormonism unacceptable) they would hold their nose and chose Rudy or Mitt over Obama, Hillary or any other Democrat (except perhaps Joe Biden). This means Rudy or Mitt wins most of the red states (especially those in the center of the country) anyway. Turnout will be low but it won't matter with the electoral college.

Meanwhile, Rudy or Mitt puts many blue states in play for the Republicans. Neither candidate is closely associated with Bush so he won't hurt them (and the best thing Bush can do for the Republican candidate is to stay uninvolved ).

Right now I put the Republicans as about a 3 to 2 favorite to win the oval office in 2008.

Who watched the debate last night, anyone? I'd love to hear your analysis. Who do you think did well and who do you think did poorly?

[/ QUOTE ]
I posted a link to the You Tube index of clips in this thread on the Politics forum.

I thought Obama and Biden did well. Edwards looked as phony as usual and Hillary is simply too shrill and unappealing a speaker.

Note that I'm more or less moderately conservative but was very impressed by Hillary in last November's Alantic Monthly cover story. But she simply doesn't come off as sympathetic in front of a camera as she can in print.

What do you guys think of an Obama/Biden ticket? Would it work?

[/ QUOTE ]

It would work better than any other pairing (among the current candidates) but I'd rather vote for a Biden/Obama ticket. IMO Obama simply isn't ready for the top spot yet but would add a lot in the second slot.

I am not 'sniping', I just want to put money on the proposition. Why would I want to try to convince you you're wrong before finding out if you are taking bets?

I agree with this assessment. This is pretty much how I see it too and as a lifelong democrat I have to say I'm a little worried! I don't feel that the front running Democrats are going to appeal in any way to the Independents or left leaning Republicans which spells big trouble.

Agree with you that Edwards comes off as phony and Hillary as unappealing but I don't see the "shrill" part.

For me, Hillary is just at a huge disadvantage. People don't want the same family running the country for that many years. It's just not right. And I don't think she's anywhere special enough to justify it. Also, and I know this is going to sound bad but I'm just keeping it honest, a lot of us aren't ready for a female president. I'm pretty open about how liberal I am politically and yet I'm not ready for a female president. I'm willing to admit it might just be me though. I seem to have a great distrust of women in authority (teachers, superintendents, managers, etc). Not sure why that is.

When I watch Hillary speak I get a feeling that she is very calculating and rehearsed. I'd almost prefer an inexperienced person like Obama who speaks his heart than someone who is so rehearsed and cold. I will have to think more about this though.

But anyway, if a moderate conservative such as yourself and a real liberal such as myself agree that Hillary is a turnoff then the Democrats are in trouble.
