Actually I have another £4 I can get out the bank Wednesday, since a temporary overdraft I've set up will take effect. So I won't starve, dear readers, worry not! But I did need to take this money today as I had literally nothing to eat, and the muffin and bagels made all the difference. The donation to the busker was for my good karma. And the cigarettes and alcohol were to relieve the stress of all this!

Postscript: having another look in the drawer this morning, I see two envelopes of foreign currency. One has four dollar bills. The other has 140 Swiss Francs, which is about $120 / £58. I immediately realise the latter must be left over from five weeks ago when the lawyer I'm now working for went to Switzerland. The secretary who's now left the firm obviously didn't get round to sending it back down to accounts.
I could take it, walk over to the bank in my lunchbreak and get it converted, spend it on cigarettes, bagels, muffins, lager and buskers.. I think there is a very good chance it would never be noticed - even if the lawyer does go to Switzerland again, he won't realise this money wasn't sent back to accounts and I'd just order him some more. But, unlike with the envelopes of 1ps, 2ps and 5ps, in this case it's clearly not worth the risk. It's too big a sum, it would too clearly be theft. This money belongs to the law firm, not to a secretary who's left the firm and didn't take her pennies with her. Besides, I get paid tomorrow. And I could do overtime tonight and earn the same amount in two or three hours. So I do the honest thing, without much thought: I phone up accounts, tell them about the money, and send it back over. They tell me I can keep hold of the four dollar bills. Result! |

So I had a further look and I found ANOTHER envelope, this one containing 115 Euros (about $160 / £78). I thought for a second that I could convert this at the bank then take this to the poker club tonight where they'd put it onto my Full Tilt account, and I could spent the evening/night playing. I get paid tomorrow so I could easily replace it in the event I lost it.
Oh Lord, why do you send these things to tempt me? Instead, I took it straight over to the lady in accounts and handed it over. She said no Euros had been issued to the laywer since last November and she didn't know what it was from, but took it anyway. So again I think I could quite easily have kept it, unless the next time the lawyer went on a trip and needed Euros he remembered his secretary had some in her desk and asked about it. I suppose it comes down to risk to reward ratio. In this case, the risk, however slight, outweighs the reward. Losing ones own money is one thing; losing money you've stolen is another - how depressing it would be! I walk the street a virtuous man! |
