Sopranos Rewind: The Second Coming
Posted by Alan Sepinwall May 21, 2007 12:29AM

(Witness the way he hides from Tony and Little Carmine in the little turret of his suburban castle; he's a coward at heart .)

Does anyone else not see this? Phil has never come across as cowardly to me. Petty, selfish, vindictive yes, but not cowardly.

Yeah, that column has been consistently bad.

I've never seen Phil as a coward. I interpreted his "hiding in the turret of his castle" as simply Phil showing that Tony and Carmine were not important enough to even see him let alone really talk to him. Phil wasn't hiding, he just had decided that the time for talk was over, so he really didnt give a [censored] about meeting them.

some thoughts

- for a split second I thought tony would throw AJ back into the pool. I know it wouldn't happen but it tells me something about how they're building up tony's character.

- AJ's exchange with his therapist in the beginning was priceless. paraphrasing:

therapist: Do you think your feelings about the Somalian are influenced by your experiences with Blanca?
AJ: what? she's not black! I mean, she's pretty dark

- meadow is hot

Tony was out of line by beating up the made-guy for what he said.

[/ QUOTE ]

Pffft. You are probably the ONLY person watching the show who thinks that.

[/ QUOTE ]

while the guy was way out of line, i think tony was out of line too. As a comparison, the ralph cifaretto comment was made in confidence and not directly at ginny, that situation was settled with some negotiation and little bloodshed (IIRC).

[/ QUOTE ]

There have been a few incidents between Phil & Tony in which action by one family against a member of the other family is an issue. Phil wanted to be the one to exact revenge on Tony Blundetto for his brother's murder, Tony wouldn't let him and eventually killed Tony B himself to save his cousin a far more painful end. And then Phil whacked Vito when Tony was prevaricating over how to deal with him.

My prediction:

Phil puts out a hit on Tony, the Feds give him the information (as payback for the terrorist info), and Tony strikes first.

No matter how disappointed he is in AJ, you know that he wouldn't do something like that. He would kill almost anyone in the world, even his wife, if he thought it was good for his business. But he would never kill his own civilian kid. (Though if AJ was in the business and F'd up, he probably would kill him. That's just the kind of guy Tony is. Though I do get the feeling that he would never kill Meadow for any reason whatsoever.)

Looks like you should watch closer yourself. It was obviously a different guy.
