I was always under the assumption Rousseau was the mother and had the baby with some dude not mentioned, Alex was taken away much like the others took away other kids, and she was raised as Ben's own.

[/ QUOTE ] K ty for clearing that up. Now that I think about it, seems very obvious. Remember, Juliette reallys wants off the island. So who says she won't do something unexpected such as spy on the losties, maybe kidnap some even for her chance off? I'm sure that the sub was not the only means of transportation.

About the misconceptions about island conceptions, keep in mind that we don't have a reason for what kept causing the pregnant mothers to die. Without a reason, we don't have a timeframe for it. It could be that for hundreds or thousands of years on the island (four-toed statue times) everything was just fine whenever a woman got pregnant. Maybe it is an effect of the 'quarantine sickness' - wether that was something DHARMA brought along to the island or an accident created it or whatever. Ben seems to be a little bit older than the DHARMA Initiative (I'm supposing they came around in the 1970's).
Rousseau was 7 months pregnant when she crashed on the island. That was 16 years ago, and maybe the sickness had not yet been invented/spread or whatever. As for Claire, the sickness was only caused by some kind of implant, so we don't know if she would've died without Ethan's secret injections or not (or even if that was all just made up by Juliet as part of her story).

One thing I haven't noticed mentioned in this thread is how the Losties will pretty much have to keep Juliet around now, or get some help from the Others. Providing the story that they provided about the island not allowing pregnant women to have kids, they'll (at least think) they need Juliet. Sun is pregnant, right? I think this will definitely be part of the story---maybe not this season, but at some point.
