Alobar,
Interesting. I may have to not feel bad in those sociology classes about people who're campaigning for a "living wage" in the future. Instead I will cite your argument. |

[ QUOTE ]
Punker, There is no way you can retire except in a 3rd world country on 1.4 mil unless you are already 60 when you start this. TBM, Relative poverty? By year 5 you make a decent living to get by. If you can use some debt for the first 4 it becomes EZ. [/ QUOTE ] dude, wtf? 1.4m free and clear is enough for me to retire right now. i'm 24. very comfortably, too. 1 mill can easily return 8% a year, which would lead to a $80,000 income and $400K liquid. even saying you cant invest any of it, i'd retire on 1.4 mil at age 50. that's 28 years at 50K a year, assuming no social security or whatever. |

I think it would be impossible to hold a job making $2500 a year. I was thinking that it would be more on the order of not having to do anything but survive, which leaves open options for disappearing into the wilderness for months on end to live off the land. That would be doable - people did that for thousands of years. It's tough to find actual open land anymore, though, so I guess that even that would be tough.

Thremp,
"Taking out any outside sources of income. Option 2 becomes impossible in the US." Free internet + free happy hours + hotels/conferences/seminars w/ free food = totally possible. If I couldn't stay with a friend or at a shelter, I'd invest in a junker car + a gym membership. |

TxRedMan,
Try thinking about inflation. Discounting your roid usage, you probably could live to ~70. GL coming up with a retirement withdrawl amount that includes for inflation and will allow you to live above the poverty line. In 40 years, your 40k will be living in the ghetto. |

Tx,
"you can live comfortably on 40K/year down here." FWIW, I know tons of people in NYC and SF who get by just fine on 40k/year or less. |
