Speed doesn't kill

Yeah, a driver driving at 100 miles an hour is no more likely to lose control than one driving at 10 mile an hour. Not only that, but if they both DO lose control, they'll cause the same amount of damage.

Bringing up good points, but if they got a picture of you and you are the owner...

[/ QUOTE ]

It's the "picture of you" part that's the problem. When a cop pulls you over, they have his first person testimony and your signature taken at the scene to establish that it was you.

With these cameras, all they have is a snapshot of someone who looks like you. No first person testimony. No signature.

[/ QUOTE ]

Are you not allowed to contest the picture? That would seem like the standard procedure to me.

[/ QUOTE ]

Over here, if the picture is not of the owner, they will try to ask you if you who that is---you don't have to answer them, even though they will try to make you do it. A friend of mine had his wife driving and since she was not the registered owner of the vehicle, he told them to f&$D off when they asked.

Oh yeah--a loophole here is if the vehicle is issued in the name of an LLC, they cannot give you a ticket. Check the laws in your states for other such loopholes.

I just took a drivers safety course (thanks speeding tickets), and found out that speed is the #1 factor in determining the likelyhood of a fatality in an accident. This is common sense. If you crash going 35, its very rare someone will be killed.

Speeding tickets might have an element of scam in them, but they are also about public safety. My son was ticketed for going 69 in a 25 zone. That ticket was not a scam.

[/ QUOTE ]

I would agree that about 3-5% of speeding tickets are not a scam.

On a public highway I'd say the dude doing 10mph is more dangerous than the one doing 100.

People tend to drive at a speed at which they are comfortable.

A great speed differential is more dangerous than speed itself.

For the ACists, pretend that I'm talking about a private road with private enforcement because that would be my ideal scenario.

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't need to pretend anything. As far as I'm concerned, if the property is owned by the government, as roads are, whatever rules they set for letting people use that property is their business, just like any other property owner. I don't LIKE the fact that the government owns the roads and I could go on about that, but that's not the topic here. With the topic at hand I have little problem with the government's behavior.

Why in the world not? You're engaging in behavior that the owners of the roads have decided is unsafe. If you don't like it, find someone else to own the roads.

[/ QUOTE ]

LOL I am assume you feel it is safe to drive 65 in all lanes of the highway. Like someone else mentioned these cameras just force people to slam on brakes and people just speed up right after the camera. I am all for keeping the roads safe, but come on guys having the police take a picture and then send it to you saying you were speeding is just BS.

These cameras don't do anything but generate revenue and do not protect the roads. Our rights our being taken away one by one and I feel that complying with this type of law enforcement will only help in the reduction of our freedoms in the future.

I just want to make sure I'm reading this right:

Are people actually complaining about being caught openly breaking the law? I can understand disagreeing with the law itself, but complaining when you get caught OPENLY VIOLATING IT? Amazing.

[/ QUOTE ]

"If you're not doing anything wrong you should have nothing to hide."

They're complaining about the method of enforcement, cameras placed on public streets. The complaint is of like kind (but lesser degree imo) as unjustified contraband searches, wiretaps, etc.

[/ QUOTE ]

We should have camera's and microphones placed in every government workplace, in every office and inside of every police car, etc and viewed and monitored by the public at large. If they are all doing this great work that benefits us they should welcome it.

I'm actually strongly in favor of actions like this. Government accountability is a must.
