[ QUOTE ]
As to why other groups proclaim their pride, I think it has to do with battling negative sterotypes. [/ QUOTE ] Is it a coincidence that some of the people on this forum who don't seem to get this are the same people who, on this forum, have been known to perpetuate those same negative stereotypes? |

straight = heterosexual white = caucasion male = male gender What's to be proud of? [/ QUOTE ] You can't break down the individual components and say that the congolmeration sucks because the individual comments aren't anything special. |

[ QUOTE ] So you are proud because you come from the race that "built Western civilization", but don't think you should be ashamed for slavery, segregation etc.? [/ QUOTE ] I know I don't need to tell a fellow as smart as you that Western civilization was the first to end slavery. It still exists in Africa and elsewhere, but you know that too, no doubt. [/ QUOTE ] Did you play a part in that too? |

[ QUOTE ]
What rational reason is there for doing so? [/ QUOTE ] To get more insights into who you are for example. The first step is to realize that a lot of what went on in the last few thousand years is wired into us. Different stuff went on with different ethnic groups in different regions, so it does make a difference which one(s) you look at. The closer you look at the right place, the more personalized the information is. But if all you do is work like a drone for 5 days, let out your stress for two, and then repeat, then I'll grant you that it doesn't much matter. But if you ever have more choices in life and more time time to reflect, then this ancestry stuff might get more interesting. |

The first step is to realize that a lot of what went on in the last few thousand years is wired into us. [/ QUOTE ] How so? [ QUOTE ] Different stuff went on with different ethnic groups in different regions, so it does make a difference which one(s) you look at. [/ QUOTE ] OK, so? [ QUOTE ] then this ancestry stuff might get more interesting. [/ QUOTE ] Ancestory stuff can be interesting. I just don't get why I have any reason to be proud of what members of my race did X years ago (or in the present for that matter) even if what they did may be considered good. edit- Thanks darryl for at least having the integrity to answer my questions. A certain other poster is so devoid of any integrity or intellectual honesty that he can't even do that. |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] So, I suppose you could be proud of being a white male specifically, but what exactly are you celebrating? [/ QUOTE ] Building the bulk of Western civilization. That's all. Pick up any history text from before 1970 and you'll see much about the white male. After that it seems that history 'changed'. [/ QUOTE ] On the back of a world which owes much to arabs, asians and africans...... [/ QUOTE ] I think I'll spend next year as a self-loathing white man just to see how the other half lives. [/ QUOTE ] What's self loathing about it? |

Re: Why can't one be proud to be a straight white male What's to be proud about? Go drive around in any part of the rural South. You'll find quite a few proud, white, straight males. They're totally happy about it too. Nothing more than that either. They're completely happy with just being white, straight and male. There's nothing interesting about them, BUT, they are white, straight and male. [/ QUOTE ] Too funny yet so true. |

Lamarckian evolution. Truly cutting edge crap you're peddling. Different stuff went on with different ethnic groups in different regions, so it does make a difference which one(s) you look at. Before the industrial revolution, the vast masses who constituted agricultural societies lived virtually identical lives: illiteracy, superstition, abject poverty, and a constant struggle for survival against the elements, disease and the wars of the more powerful. But if all you do is work like a drone for 5 days, let out your stress for two, and then repeat, then I'll grant you that it doesn't much matter. But if you ever have more choices in life and more time time to reflect, then this ancestry stuff might get more interesting. more interesting but no more plausible! |

[/ QUOTE ] I'm not saying you should necessarily be proud. Feelings like that come on their own anyway, not from logically proving you should have it. But just to give another perspective...if my son does something good, I feel proud. If you can relate to that, then why not the other way? And if it can go back one generation, then why not several? |
