I'm in the club too. I have a regular 9-5 job, but routinely stay up until 3 or 4 in the morning. Doing absolutely nothing. It causes problems with the fiancee too. She goes to bed fairly early (9-10PMish), so she accepts the fact that I'm not always going to go to bed at the same time as her. But every night I don't go to bed with her, I'll say something like "I'll be in bed around midnight". And I have every intention in the world of doing so. Next thing I know, it's 3:00 in the morning, I have to wake up in less than four hours, and she yells out "Are you EVER coming to bed?" "Yeah, honey, I'll be right there - I fell asleep on the couch again..." I really don't fall asleep on the couch, but she gets pissed when I only sleep for like two hours before work, so I use that line often. "Why did you lie to me and say you were going to be in bed at midnight??" What she doesn't understand is that I really 100% fully intended to be in bed with her at midnight, but I got sucked into poker or some message board or a Yahoo game or whatever and somethings just not letting me go to bed. I don't know how to change this habit.
She went out of town to visit a friend this past weekend, so I had the place to myself. I went to work on Friday, got home that afternoon/evening, and didn't go to bed til around midnight Saturday. I was up for about 40 straight hours. For absolutely no reason. *Shrug* This thread does make me feel a little more normal though. |

I have this problem from time to time, and it manifests itself in other ways. There's something I KNOW I SHOULD DO, I rationally tell myself it needs doing now, and I don't do it. It strikes me as different from procrastination, which I also have issues with.
I've read meditation helps with these things, that the "monkey mind" where you have internal dialogues with yourself about what you should be doing can be quieted. This would allow you to recognize that staying up late watching uninteresting TV isn't worthwhile and act on it. |

I am exactly like this. It reminds me of Seinfeld's schtick, "we fight off sleep and continue to seek out entertainment!" It's a very annoying state. I also have trouble falling asleep once i get into bed, though.
For what it's worth, I tried some Ambien once and that stuff was the bomb. I don't think I ever rested so well as when I was on it. |

I have this problem. It has been much worse during college so far. I thought I would never truly succeed in life because the people getting a good night sleep are the one's who are going to beat me out for the most elite jobs and positions.
Glad to see other's have this problem and I'm not truly screwed. |

[ QUOTE ]
I will often waste a number of hours doing ridiculous crap at the tail end of my day that would be SO SO SO much better spent either sleeping or doing stuff earlier the next day. How many of you have this same problem? [/ QUOTE ] Is it a problem? Or is this simply what you enjoy doing? If it is common practice, as I would imagine it is with many of us, maybe it is the classification as 'problem' which is the problem. I enjoy staying up late doing mindless crap when I have nothing going on the next day. Hell, I enjoy it when I do have crap going on the next day, but then of course you we have to prioritize. All I'm saying is that imo too many people restrict themselves from doing things that they obviously truly enjoy doing and that is a shame. Enjoy life...however which way makes you happy! |
