I want to see a video of a girl sobbing and becoming a total wreck after doing one of these. I'm such a horrible person.

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] Sponger, Maybe I have an odd sense of humor or lack of compassion. Either way, I don't think these tickets are a big deal or worthy of all this discussion. It's a joke, if one feels the urge to harm themself or cry over it they should seriously consider re-evaluating their life. Again, it is tasteless if you know for a fact the person you give it to will react so emotionally. But you can't make that judgment on their credit score alone! Plenty of people in debt have a strong sense of humor and would not break down after receiving a freaking joke ticket. [/ QUOTE ] Why do [censored] always accuse other people of not "having a sense of humor"? If you had a sense of humor you would realize this practical joke is NOT FUNNY. There is no humor to be extracted. If you gain amusement from the misery of others you don't "have an odd sense of humor", you're just a [censored]. [/ QUOTE ] How can you tell someone else what they should think is funny or not? Quite a few people in this thread have said that they think its funny? I'd be willing to bet that many of those people are kind, thoughtful people. I wouldn't find this cruel if someone did it to me at all(and for the record, I have been in a ton of different financial situations due to the variance of being a poker pro) mostly because money does not equal happiness to me. Thats why I think the cancer analogy is so bad. I find it rather sad that people would value money so much as to compare it to living(not having cancer). |

I have been in a ton of different financial situations due to the variance of being a poker pro) [/ QUOTE ] I think this is the reason a lot of us see it as not that big a deal. Someone who has never experienced a $500 swing in one day, let alone $10k, is gonna have a lot more adrenaline flowing and thus is gonna have a much huger letdown. |

[/ QUOTE ] Oh, classy move on calling me a materialist and/or bragging about your wealth. Money does equal happiness, though. Given the current state of medicine, money pretty much equals life. That's off topic, but Jesus what a pathetic argument. I'm not telling people what is or is not funny to them, I'm saying that if you find what the OP's cousin did funny you are a douchebag(and obviously not thoughtful and kind, because thoughtful and kind people would not find the prank amusing). Though just to make it clearer, is the doctor playing a prank on the terminal patient funny? And Christ, when did people get so stupid that they can't understand analogies? It's not exactly the same, but it is comparable. The guy that came up with the cancer analogy was trying to make his point clearer by presenting a more extreme case. If it was exactly the same it would serve no rhetorical purpose. |

I thought we all could at least agree that the cancer patient analogy is ridiculous.

The fact that this was part of a Yankee Swap makes this joke particularly lame. Unless it's understood by all that gag or cheap gifts are allowed, then whomever gets this gift not only gets suckered into the gag, but they also don't get a real item to keep, despite having spent $15 or $20 on a gift which they donated.
Conclusion: Your cousin is a douchebag. |

[ QUOTE ]
It is a tasteless joke if made deliberately to someone with less means with the intention of upsetting them [/ QUOTE ] By letting the celebration go on for such a prolonged period - and even spurring it on - this is precisely what he did. That's why everyone but you says it was cruel and unwarranted. |

[ QUOTE ]
This was hard for me to even believe: Our family does a gift exchange of the variety you've probably heard called numerous things: Yankee Trader, Chinese Gift Exchange, Thieves Christmas, etc. One person opens a gift, the next can steal or go under the tree, etc. Well, my brother ended up with a couple of lottery tickets. He and his wife have thousands in school debt and are struggling month to month. She scratched off the ticket after the exchange and found it to be a 10k winner. It was total joy in the household. 30 family members, celebrating with my bro and his wife. They were talking about paying off some loans and what a break this was for them. They even gave the ticket a quick glance to see that it was legit. It seemed so. 15 minutes later, my cousin (the black sheep of the family, really) announces, "Now, hold on, make sure you read the super tiny print on the back of the tickets!" In mega-small print practically requiring a magnifying glass, the print said that it was a gag gift. My sister-in-law immediately started crying. My brother looked like he was ready to jack my cousin. Question: how long can the gag go on before it's not funny? What would you do? [/ QUOTE ] The responses in this thread just show what [censored] people can be. To think that giving someone a fake ticket so they can get exciting and you get to watch them fall is funny is just downright pathetic. It isn't funny. It's being a selfish [censored]. |

This would be funny if you gave it to someone you hate and mailed it to them or something. However, for a family member, not too cool.
