Soderbergh sucks. Mike Leigh's work is similar and way better.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet

I'm sort of a Jim Jarmusch / Hal Hartley fan but not sure they qualify. Eric Rohmer too.

meh, there's millions, this thread is tiresome.

Have I read the entire thread and missed any mention of Mike Nichols?

no @ soderbergh pls, jesus

gilliam doesn't make the cut either and i'm a fan (too much mediocrity amongst the brilliant ideas)

don't think anyone has said polanski yet, he's an obvious choice by your criteria (chinatown, repulsion, the pianist)

personally i think werner herzog is worthy

no-one has mentioned the obvious foreign guys like ozu, fellini, godard etc either

Raiders was directed by Spielberg.

As far as Spielberg - I mostly HATE him.

There's JAWS - though Jaws is a testament to Verna Fields editing - she saved that film. Close Encounters was good, as was Raiders - so okay, that's three. But most of evertyhing else makes me nauseous.

I still think he should be mentioned because of Schindler's List, Raiders and SPR.

Wes Anderson

Bottle Rocket
Rushmore
The Royal Tenebaums/Life Aquatic

You could argue over 3 great films but Bottle Rocket and Rushmore are outstanding and all of his work is entertaining and interesting.
