I'd like to get good at playing poker.

One measure of goodness is money. That's convenient, because money is nice. But I'll never be a guy trying to 12 table SSNL, trading winrate for dollars. I know that's -EV, at least in the short term, but I don't really care.

It's a hobby.

[/ QUOTE ]

how would you be trading winrate for dollars? The higher the winrate the higher the dollars.

[/ QUOTE ]

Playing more tables slightly diminishes you BBpt/100 depending on how many extra tables you play. I know it does for me, i've never quite got into gear with multi-tabling but will give it a go soon after i prove myself at NL200.

At the minute I am playing the 200s and taking shots at the 500s and I'm pretty much a HU specialist at the moment

You all seem to have such lofty goals.

I first started playing poker in Dec/Jan this year and after switching to NL around March I remember a quote by AJ that NL100 was good place to be and this was my longish term target by the end of this year.

Now I'm playing NL100 (still NL50 when I'm not on my A game e.t.c) and can feel making NL100 my standard limit achievable I need a new far goal as I'm not going to be moving up for ages.

I'll think I'll shoot for just trying to play really well and enough $$$ that I can set up some ventures/do something good with the extra money.

My short term goals are; Become a winning player at 100NL.

My long term goals are also simple; Win enough with poker to quite delivering newspapers...(yeah)

I want to learn to play well enough so I can beat 5/10NL whether I'm sitting with fish or regulars.

I'd be happy with 0.1PTBB/100 at 5/10 - just as long as it's a positive winrate over a large sample.

[/ QUOTE ]

matrix,

Is this for real? You'd really want to grind out .1ptbb/100??? If so, why?

[/ QUOTE ]

no you misunderstand.

I want to learn this fabulous game until I am good enough to sit at a 5/10NL table and beat the regulars there over a significant sample (say 100k hands), it's more about being able to be in the top 6% or whatever it is of players that don't lose while playing at a dcent level for me rather than making more money than I know what to do with.

If I'm good enough to do that it sounds reasonable that I could beat lower limits for a significant earn or that I could go and play live and destroy any table that I'm sitting at.

I don't care much about money as long as I make enough to pay the bills and enjoy myself and I don't have to work full time at anything unless I choose to, I don't care how much I make - money is a means to an end not an end in itself and once you are making enough money to be comfortable there are other much better things to start chasing in life.

get to SSNL (100NL) by the end of October.

2 shots so far, 1200 hands, -$1150. (Was about identical to my first couple shots at 50NL)

my short-short term goal is simply to play better. my longer-short term goal is that I'd liek to be able to make around $400 a week so that I don't have to work at a real job and I can focus even more on my game. my long term goal: sky is the limit. I have confidence in my skills and my ability to learn and improve but I know that I have a very long way to go.

Make the move to NL 200 permanent

Earn enough for my girlfriend and I to live off my winnings

Eventually move up to 5/10

And I thought I was doing bad taking shots at 100NL. Down around 300$ right now at FT. Thought I could actually settle down untill a set over set, and a overcard getting outdrawn by a flush...
