govman: I'm 23. I just think invoking Nazism every time something pisses people off politically is stupid. I'm young but I've already seen way too many people take the path of, "I hate this guy, what's the worst thing I can call him...YOU NAZI!"

I'm not pissed off by it on moral principles, I just think it's dumb, and more importantly I hate it when people on "my side" look like jerks to everyone else. That Nazi-Frist avatar has already appeared on Google News attached to a story about the ban. Somehow I don't think that's good for us if Average Non-Poker Player happens to see it.

I agree with you. I was just pointing out that "most" young ppl don't care what happened in 1940's. Part of it is an education problem. The other part of the problem is it's just an 18 year old's nature to do stupid [censored]. When I was 18 it was ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME me.

hmmm i'm 30 now and it's ME MEMEMEMEMEMEMEMEMME heh heh

I was going to say this earlier when I first saw the avatar, but knowing how emotional people are right now I didn't say anything. Now that the issue has been brought up all I will say is that equiting Frist with Nazism does nothing but bring yourself down. In other words people who think with their head and not their emotions, won't take you seriously. This also goes for conservatives who call liberals communist. I am only 27 so obviously I wasn't alive during WWII but I have delt with skinheads before, and let me tell you...Nothing compares the to the evil ideology that is Nazism.

What do you think we do? Do you think we just print an infinite amount of books and just ship some to the bookstores whenever we feel like it? It doesn't work that way.

Best wishes,

So I guess you don't believe in the Martingale Book Publishing Strategy.

The avatar is a concise statment.

Pointing out the flaws in the comparison is akin to pointing out flaws in analogies... they always exist. It is the siliarities that are important, the rest is assumed to not be part of the comparison.

His avatar does not say Frist is identical to Hitler in every single way.

Have you never seen a political cartoon with GWB with horns and a pitchfork? Do you email the cartoonist and point out that Satan is a fallen angel, whereas GWB is a politician and the cartoon is inaccurate? Of course not.

The avatar may be disturbing to some people but that is often what makes a visual statement effective. I am guessing that seeing Frist in a nazi get up is probably not very high on the shock meter, even for Jewish people, but I really don't know.

The fact that it is on a google news story is GREAT in my opinion. This guy wants to be president!!

Link?

Mason,

Though I look forward to hearing what 2+2 has to say, can you explain to everyone here exactly what good a statement will do us NOW?

[/ QUOTE ]

Since Mason brought it up. All people like Senator Frist have to do to support their point about gambling corrupting young people is post a link to the forums and have people see the avatars like yours; read the hateful comments about the government and it's leaders; go to OOT read the stuff about drugs, hookers, deragatory comments about women; etc. You want to influence your Congressman? Please don't tell them your screen name and have get a gander of your avatar. You made a post about being more politically aware. Start by ridding yourself of your avatar.

I think the avatar is ahameful. This site is built on the idea of vigorous debate without personal insults. The fact of the matter is that Frist has a point of view that is very unpopular here, but in our system of government opposing views are welcome. We just vote against them.

Mason

Thugs are people who get what they want through the use of violent force or the threat of violent force, ie do what I say or else.

Bill Frist, and each and every other member of our entire government, is a thug. Nothing more, nothing less.

By voting for or against, you support this system of thuggery whereby the majority (or the largest minority) attempts to, once again under violent threat of force, cram their desires down the collective throats of everyone.

This in turn makes you, the voter, a thug.

It is unfortunate that many good natured people like yourself welcome such thuggery into this world with open arms.

While I agree that we dont project a very "righteous" image, Im hardly concerned about impressing congressmen. If we alter our expressions to please our government, where does that leave us?

great post!

i guess i'm naive, but i thought we lived in a country where having an insulting avatar, talking about hookers and blow, and otherwise expressing yourself was still ok.

this poker legislation just reminds me of how repressed and puritanical everyone is around here.

obv. you have a point about the image we present, but i want to live in a country where i can be myself.

the things you talk about are small. we should concentrate on organizing, and making logical arguments in favor of online gambling / doing what you want w/ your money for non-harmfull entertainment purposes.
