I did it with $200, but I played .50-1 LHE, not NLHE. Just 4-table grinded a bankroll up to around $12,000 in month in a half, then started playing $10-20 SH and live games.

not when you're runnin hot and moving up quick. I turned a $500 deposit into 15k in a couple of days one time. Then turned that 15k into over 100k in a couple of months at 5/10 NL. Anything is possible.

I played many hours, 4-8 tabling. Also ran ridiculously hot at every limit, including a few 2k sessions at 5-10 SH and 10-20 SH. Running hot at the right times...

On a funny side note, I also agree 100% with the people who have talked about real life experience and money management being huge factors in being able to make it as a aspiring pro. After building my bankroll, I also hit a $15k tournament score at the Bellagio, immediately did things like jump into a SH $80-160 game, indulge in many of the sins of Las Vegas, eat $40 sushi dinners, etc. When I got back from Vegas, I also bought a bunch of stuff (new TV, new sound system for car and home, new digital camera, new computer, etc. etc.), and had the first losing month of my poker career. It was the first time in my life I'd had any significant money, and I didn't know how to handle myself.

I was soon in bad shape, and having to grind it out at $3-6 SH and $5-10 SH again, when I should have been playing $30-60 or something. The opportunity cost of these follies is off the charts bad. I'm now back to the previous levels of play at $20-40 and $30-60, but it took me like 5 months to do it. Of course, I was also a "pro" the whole time, so it may be alot easier to get back on your feet if you're not gouging your bankroll with living expenses.

To the people asking about me, the only big bankroll jump I had via an MTT was when I hit a $2,000 score in a $20 tournament. My bankroll before was about $600. I had tons of success in the $200+15 sngs before I ever hit another significant tournament score.

FWIW, turning a small roll into a large amount of cash with a minimal risk of ruin is fairly easy if you are a winning player that knows how to properly manage a bankroll. The key, definately, is conservative bankroll management. Don't play 25 NL with $200. Your bankroll isn't big enough. Play some $5 sngs or micro limit cash games on Stars or UB.

Personally, if I had to start all over again with just $200, I think I would play the $6 turbo SNGs on stars. If my bankroll dropped below $120 or so, I would move down to the $3 sngs there. I don't think I would have any problem doing this mentally.

I've actually been thinking about making a prop bet on things like this. Let's say I have 5 days to turn $200 into $5,000. If I can find people willing to bet against me, there is a good chance something like this will happen in the near future.

Agreed ... but 200 to 12,000 by 4-tabling .5/1 limit?

Even if it was 10 hours of 6-max every single day for 45 days, that's like 7bb/100. Possible? Color me skeptical.

BTW - I turned 600 into 60K in about 6 months with SNGs, PLO, and MTTs. I keep a b/r of 30-50K and take money out each month so I can buy crap and invest.

... but I'm old (over 30) and "wise" and poker isn't my full time job.

Let me guess, you won $200 in sngs, won the sunday lottery at stars and then lost 50k playing plo.

Started with $50 in 2002. Took 3 years to get to middle 5 figures. The roll building over those first two years was sloooow. My feeling is that you have to be doing it for quite a while as a "hobby" before you have enough experience and $$ to make it actually worth your time.

Ironically, you don't really make a run at decent money until after you've already made decent money over the longrun, and can maintain playing middle/high limits ($100nl and up) while being able to have proper bankroll management.

I am trying to make myself have better money management, as that was my downfall in my first onine venture. I am up to 1200 right now and will be getting paid close to 400 in rakeback at the end of this month, so I should be sitting pretty and ready to step up to 50 NL with around 1600. I like being over-rolled as I said so I don't fear bad days, but the downside is winning doesn't feel quite as good and it can become more of a grind, but I want to make money playing this game so bad I am willing to do it. Time is also another thing your sacrificing. Once I get around to 2500 I plan on cashing out the original 200 I deposited and adding two tables of NL 100 while playing my other two or 3 at 50 NL still. Hopefully unless I hit a bad variance run I will be at NL 200 level with a nice 5000 roll by summer at the latest. I don't set goals for myself time wise though, I just play as best I can and try and get better and the money takes care of itself. When I say the end of summer I'm just gauging.
