[ QUOTE ]
Americans don't know much about Canada because Americans aren't taught much about Canada in school. I bet you guys are taught all about America in school, right? It's because our country is so important to the world. Sorry to break it to you, bro. [/ QUOTE ] No, actually we are taught very little US history and geography in school. |

[ QUOTE ] Quote: How do you pronounce "out"? Quote: what are you talking aboot? The only time I hear anyone talk like this is when an American is trying to do an impression of a Canadian. [/ QUOTE ] Almost everyone ive ever met from northern michigan has thi accent, so i would assume 25 miles north would be the same, no? [/ QUOTE ] Yes. |

Grunch.
Therefore, this is probably the only serious reply. It's the same reason most people don't know [censored] about Africa, Caribbean Islands and Fiji. Unless you set out to learn specfically about it, the above named places (and many more) did not have a big / direct enough influence on history until relatively recently. Also, it's the same reason the traditional canon of literature consists mostly of "dead white guys." On the other hand, Europe and America have shaped history extremely powerfully, which is why someone from Iceland probably has a fair amount of knowledge RE: the aforementioned places. --Also the same reason, I suspect, that English is an internationally important language. For good or bad, Europe and, subsequently, America have been the biggest players in the world for quite some time. |

[/ QUOTE ] My point is that regardless of what you are taught in school you should make a point of having some basic amount of knowledge outside of your freaking city, state, or country. There is a big beautiful amazing world out there that IMO many Americans miss out on because they can't seem to get the fact that the good old USA isn't the only place of relevence on the freaking planet. |

[/ QUOTE ] very true I guess the problem most Canadians have with the whole situation is that it seems nearly all Americans say "our country is the most important in the world FCCK YEAH" when virtually none of them have contributed anything to that |

Great thread.
Asking people little facts about geography and history is not a proper way to gauge the entire population's knowledge of a country. It's lame and just and easy way to make America look bad. Except it does not work, since we all don't give a [censored] about Canada, we only care about ourselves. |

My country is the most important in the world, and I have contributed nothing to that. Have you contributed anything to Canada's mediocrity? BTW, I am not a nationalist. I just enjoy poking fun at Canadians' inferiority complexes. |

[/ QUOTE ] see, the thing is, you learned a ton of stuff about america through american sports and american television because they're shown and discussed in canada in america, we have no canadian tv channels and canadian sports aren't covered on tv or in newspapers |

[ QUOTE ] This could be done to canadians also, asking old people in front of a camera about stuff that doesn't exist is a sure fire way for them to just agree with what you're saying so as to not look stupid, they just dont know it makes them look even worse. [/ QUOTE ] Old people??? Don't make me laugh. It looked to me that there were some 30 something white collar types that believed Canada used a 20 hour clock and had different time zones. [/ QUOTE ] Its TV. You don't get to see the all the people that know he is full of [censored] because that gets cut out. Relax. |
