[ QUOTE ]
I used to think Phil Laak and Antonio were overrated, but seeing them on HSP they're actually pretty good. Overrated : pretty much anyone who's won a big tourney, since they'll get "rated" far more than they deserve for the win, which is 99% luck. Agree with Daniel N, Scotty, also Gus Hansen, Carlos Mortensen, Alan Goehring, Joe Hachem, etc. [/ QUOTE ] Are you smoking crack? Carlos Mortensen had an awesome 2006 WSOP, I don't have an exact count but I know for sure he final tabled 3 events, and I'm pretty sure it was more like 5 Joe Haschem??? Steve Danneman, yes, Joe Haschem also had an Awesome WSOP 2006. Gus Hansen??? this is freaking ridiculous... Negreanu come on man, do tournament wins, cashes mean anything to you? Sure he's a freaking luckbox THAT'S WHY HE WAS the POY. bullpoopy! |

[ QUOTE ]
I had forgotten all about ivy when i made my initial post, howcver, i have seen him get a little steamed at time also, whereas i have not seen Forrest get steamed regardless of what happens. I would also put ivy in the overated players, even though he is a great player becasue he is made out to be a god from olympus. he is tops, maybe even best, but they have made more out of him than is justified. thus he is great and maybe the best, but is overated, nonetheless. [/ QUOTE ] there is a contradiction in terms here, can you tell where? |

As the original poster of this thread, I thought I'd make some concluding remarks having read everyone's comments.
First, I would like to take back my "overrated" status for Antonio Esfandiari. I do think he is a good player and will be competitive in the game for years to come. I originally felt he was over-marketed for having only been on poker a few years, but I do agree he's very talented. This leads me to my second point, which is that people seemed to have misread my post. I did in fact suggest some criteria for who is overrated. They are basically people who are over-hyped and over-marketed by the media based on their actual skill level or amount of time spent in the game. This does allow for some objective comparisons of players and their image with respect to their skills and longevity in the game. In my opinion, Evelyn Ng and Tuan Le still fit that overrated category, whereas Antonio is a bit more objectively "good" after second thoughts. As for the other players people listed, I think it's RIDICULOUS to say that there are overrated guys: Daniel Negreanu (UHH...) Gus Hansen (crazy, but good) Phil Ivey (HELLO???....) David Williams (he's good) Eli Elezra (who's overrating him to begin with?) Annie Duke (she simply hasn't been playing, but when she does, she's good. ...nasty personality, but still good) That's my 2cents for now, -TheMan |

Over rated - jennifer harmon [/ QUOTE ] Wha..wha...whaaaat??? You think she's overrated? If anything she is seriously underrated by the public. She's one of the top high stakes cash game players in history. She has the chops to back it up too. |

Um...is that list a joke..How can you consider the current leader in the player of the year race overrated...He's won over $5 million and is one of best tournament players at the moment...Jennifer Harman is widely regarded by all the pros as the best female player..She regularly plays in the "Big Game" at the Bellagio..

[ QUOTE ] Negreanu is very good, but I'm getting sick of his rants about the lawsuit. Slamming those involved as "weren't millionaires before the WPT, except maybe Phil Gordon" is just childish and stupid. Hey, Daniel, basic fact-check: Chris Ferguson won the WSOP BEFORE the WPT existed. That would make him rich, a millionaire, and popular BEFORE the WPT, not after. And it wasn't the WPT that made Fossilman famous -- it was the WSOP (which also made him a multi-millionaire). In fact, I can't think of any WPT table I've seen Raymer at. Negreanu wins my "most overrated", only because he's so willing to rant, but obviously also unwilling to make sure he's at least being factual. Playwise: Evelyn Ng. Annie Duke. [/ QUOTE ] I'm not saying I disagree with you. But IMHO DN was saying the popularity of the WPT helped make poker so popular. Therefore making the WSOP bigger. I think it was hole cames that did it. [/ QUOTE ] The WPT did make Poker bigger, I don't doubt that. What I don't like is Negreanu spouting off at the mouth and not even bothering to make sure he's being factual. As I indicated above, his little tirade about how the Seven who filed "weren't even millionaires" before the WPT is utter nonsense and easily shown to be false by simply Googling them... or being a pro who knows his competition. I mean really, how hard is it to know that Chris Ferguson won the WSOP, which means he won at least a million in that one tournament (as one example)? It only diminishes any point he might have when he 1) chooses to insult other professionals; and 2) doesn't bother to be factual in those insults. |

Most Over-Rated
Annie Duke...Best Female Player? Please...Harman is clearly a better cash game player, and Liebert is clearly a better tournament player. Before you throw Annie's tournament winnings at me, keep in mind a HUGE chunk of it was essentially from a ten person freeroll....big deal...anyone at that table had an equal chance of winning it. Clonie Gowen...How is she even famous? Evelyn Ng...See question regarding Clonie Gowen. Any non-champion ME event final tablist in the last 2 years with the exception of Allen Cunningham. Under-rated -Antonius -Hachem - Anyone who thinks Hachem is over-rated or a donk either hasn't seen him play, and/or isn't keeping track of his results. -Alan Goehring -Jay Hemoweitz |
