Foldequity, You are doing a major disservice to SpecT. [/ QUOTE ] He's not dropping out he's taking a year off. Anyway Australia's Middle class is >>>> America's too, we have a giant skills/labour shortage and a booming mining industry which is the main thing propping up our economy. Without exaggerating, the workers at mine's here usually earn more than the engineers. So dropping out in Australia isn't the poverty sentence it is in America. |

FE,
On this forum, we usually talk about EV when considering a decision. Dropping out of college is definitely -EV. Sometimes, you can get a great combination of luck, genius, and timing (I guess this is luck as well) and become tremendously successful. Don't let these success stories blur your vision. I won't let the time I stacked someone by pushing 72o UTG at a 10 handed table, getting called by AA, and sucking out blur my vision. You should do the same. |

I was just responding to Fly's claim that if SpecT takes a year or two off, then he is probably a moron. We're not even talking about dropping out here! Taking a year off is often a fantastic idea, nearly all of my friends who did it came back invigorated and motivated, and performed much better at uni than they were before their break. |

wait wait. i dont wanna drop out of college. I think dropping out would be a really stupid idea. I'm losing motivation and getting really bored with everything so i wanna have a big change. I'm only 18, so its not like im in a rush to get my degree. and ive only got 1 1/2 years left, and its a real easy degree.
so yeh, i was thinkin of goin away and doing somethin else for a year or two, then hopefully b motivated and actually want to finish my degree. i dunno if this is a good idea, coz i think alot of ppl try this and never return, but i really dont like uni atm and im finding it really hard to go to class and stuff. Oh plus i think im in a pretty unique situation for sum1 my age coz im not tied down by a job and i have the financial security to do this. but yeh, all the advice has been good so far, i just wanted to try and clarify my thoughts abit more edit - [ QUOTE ] Taking a year off is often a fantastic idea, nearly all of my friends who did it came back invigorated and motivated, and performed much better at uni than they were before their break. [/ QUOTE ] this is basically my thoughts aswell oh... and... i dont wanna try and b those pro college dropouts like branson or gates or wateva coz i dont think that would work for me. id have much more success if i finished my degree |

Fold, Alot of people who plan to "take a year off or two" never return. [/ QUOTE ] Yes, and most of those people weren't really serious about there degree in the first place, and were either there for the Party's, bumming off Centrelink or forced by mummy and daddy to go. We can assume that SpecT is neither. Look, by the time you hit uni, you've had thirteen straight years of school , and no chance to form any perspective of what the world outside of the schooling system is like. A year off is a small detour to take, and if you're starting to burn out and are having trouble putting your degree into perspective, then IMO it is probably a great idea. |

the downsides being the lure of real-life money opportunities, motivation issues, being outdated, new policy, smarter kids, etc.

the downsides being the lure of real-life money opportunities, motivation issues, being outdated, new policy, smarter kids, etc. [/ QUOTE ] Those last three are pretty silly. Kids get smarter year-to-year now lol? Also there's usually 3 years before curriculum changes invalidated your subject's credit, I'm sure there's something similar at most uni's, in any case SpecT would obviously find out first. Also how is finishing your course more recently going to make you outdated? Also, the lure of real-life money making opportunities has less sway on professional poker players IMO, as it is easy to play poker while studying, and SpecT will very likely realise that even as a "full time poker pro" he is only putting in 20-40 hrs a week max. before burning out, and thus going back to uni will not cut into poker time. |
