[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] davey, I guess I am use to American sports, which do not have promotion/relegation, and every team wants to win. [/ QUOTE ] This is not true. [/ QUOTE ]of course it is. Every team wants to win every game. Of course that isn't likely to happen. But what incentive is there for a team and its coach to not want to win? The promotion/relegation leads to teams merely just trying to survive. So they look at their schedule and circle likely wins, or at least circle games they know they have to win. They also look at their schedule and know before the season the games they are likely to lose. In the major sports in the US, there is no promotion/relegation, so teams don't have to survive. So their only goal is to win as many games as possible and make the playoffs. |

but once it is clear they have no shot at the playoffs, the (unstated) goal is often to get as strong a draft position as possible. i doubt the saints were happy the finished ahead of the texans last year... until the texans took williams instead of bush of course

This? [/ QUOTE ] I don't think that's what he wanted. He wants to see the STANDINGS after each week. Your link just shows the results. I'd meant to basically create my own. Every week go to: http://rsssf.com/tablese/eng07.html and copy the current standings (copying from them because the standings are in pure text as opposed to having a bunch of formatting). Unfortunately, I negelected to do that until now. |

For certain sports, this reality comes sooner then others. I would guess around week 9 or 10 in the NFL and after the all star break in the NBA. Baseball, who knows. I really don't know how much of an impact a first rounder makes in MLB. My point though, is that teams in MLB, NFL, and NBA all (for the most part) start the season with the intention of going to the playoffs. I don't think the same thing can be said about the EPL. |

there is no incentive to lose in relegation/promotion leagues, [/ QUOTE ] obviously. Thats not the point. Basically if what davyemk is saying about Reading, they know that they have certain games they have to win because they know they have certain games they are likely to lose. So for them, their mentality is to survive as opposed to win. I think the difference here is quite distinct. |

[/ QUOTE ] that happens a lot in almost every league, setting up "must win" games based on your schedule. |

[/ QUOTE ]yeah except they are labeled as must win games because of playoff potential/implications. |

A poor team in the premiership [/ QUOTE ] and its not even close take a look at what has happened to coventry since their relegation. THey somehow survived in the top flight for 32 years before being sent down and the money they lost in their relegation has crippled them. Same goes for Derby, Leicester, Ipswhich, Southampton, and a host of others. If you can't get yourself promoted back again when the parachute payments end, you could very well be in the second tier for a long time. THe money in the premiership is just way too good |
