i don't understand how you can go by anything other than record when talking about how a team is performing.

please let me know how YOU do it. recent hot streaks? that's like saying i've won with my last 5 72o's so that's a better hand than 77, or i've been hitting my flushes all night, so somehow they are more likely to come in than last night.

This isn't good. ERA can largely be attributed to luck. It takes into the account the luck of when a player hits a triple, with 2 outs or none, because with 2 outs he is less likely to score.

Edit- an even better example is that if in 4 IP, a player gives up 3 BB and 1 HR, he can have anywhere from 1-4 ER.

era can be sort of misleading, there are a lot of other important stats, just putting his era up there doesn't prove much. that said i agree with you about mussina.

the point about record is not that the yankees have won 13/15. the point is that they have shown some signs of life and looked like a very good baseball team, as opposed to the piece of crap that got swept by the drays. for the last 3 weeks the yankees have not looked like a 24-21 team, they have looked like the teams which have won championships in the last 10 years.

your poker analogy is wrong, the coin will come up heads 50% of the time even if it has come up heads the all of the last 10, but a baseball team is not a coin. teams get hot and cold, they play well and have good morale and go on runs, obviously a deck cannot.
